Photo of the Month
Roobarb is 10 months old and loves her delicious Wombaroo, a kangaroo milk replacement. She's a squawker who loudly communicates her dismay when left alone in a room. Barb, as we call her, will be in the house under the watchful eyes of Blake and Jordan Hansen until later this spring, when sheā€™ll be ready to greet farm visitors alongside our other kangaroos.

Hansen's Holiday Hams are supplied from Webster City Custom Meats in Webster City, Iowa. They are bone-in, skinless, shankless, and certified hickory smoked.

Wheel deals for Cedar Valley Cyclists
Hansenā€™s Dairy is now an official sponsor of the Cedar Valley Cyclists, a local non-profit bicycling organization. The group aims to promote safe, social and inclusive bicycling activities for people of all ages and abilities.

Riders who show their Cedar Valley Cyclists membership card at our Cedar Falls and Waterloo stores will receive 50 cents off an ice cream treat!

Fun fact: Our Cedar Falls store is situated along the bike trails and is a great stop for rest and refreshments. Weā€™ve got a bike rack and indoor and outdoor seating areas ready to roll!

Easter egg hunt!
On Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, customers who make a purchase at our Waterloo and Cedar Falls stores are eligible to pick an Easter egg from a basket and find a prize inside!

From April 22-30, enter a drawing to win a basket of ultra-local goodies, including: Hansenā€™s Dairy butter, cheese curds and Wagyu beef sticks from Hudson; Laughlin honey from Grundy Center; Country View Dairy yogurt from West Union; Fit-Pop popcorn from Cedar Falls; Candy Kitchen Turtles Candy from Fairbank; and Fat Cup coffee from Waterloo.

Entry forms are available at our Waterloo and Cedar Falls stores, and one basket will be given away from each store.
Customer of the Month
Our April Customer of the Month is the Rice family, who found themselves missing Hansen Dairy products when they moved from Waterloo to Missouri. They've since moved back and are now frequent customers at our Cedar Falls store.

ā€œOur family first started eating Hansenā€™s ice cream at Hansenā€™s in Waterloo. Now that we live in Cedar Falls, summertime is full of walks on the bike path to get half gallons of ice cream to bring home,ā€ mom Brooke said. Her husband, Tyler, ā€œlikes to stop by Hansens for cheese curds, milk, butter, whipped cream, and other locally made treats. Not only are we supporting a local business, but their dairy products taste great!ā€

Itā€™s a big undertaking to get the whole family to the bike trails in the summer, Brooke said, laughing. The couple have eight children: Ava, 14; Myka, 12; Ella, 9; Noah, 8; Makenna, 3; Ezra, 2; and Nehemiah, 2 months.

But a stop at Hansenā€™s to enjoy some ice cream makes the journey sweeter. ā€œTheir favorites are the Mint Chocolate Chip and the Cake Batterā€ ice cream, Brooke said.

Brooke homeschools their children and Tyler runs a handyman and Christmas lighting business. They love the selection they find on their weekly trips to our Cedar Falls store, counting ice cream, dill-flavored cheese curds, butter and skim milk among their go-to items.

For 14-year-old Ava, no trip to Hansen's is complete without a quart of heavy cream. She loves to make whipped cream for strawberries and other treats, her mom said.

Cow of the Month
Our April Cow of the Month is eBay. She turns 3 years old on April 10 and is mom to two calves, one of them a heifer named E-Trade!

Though known to do her own bidding (see what we did there?), eBay is a pleasant cow to work with in the milking parlor. She even has her favorite stall!

This gentle lady boasts an above-average tally of 23,000 pounds of milk in her first year of production. Thatā€™s 42,791 glasses of milk!

Despite her name, sheā€™ll never be sold online. This sweet, easy-going gal would surely break the internet!
Cooking with Hansen's
Here's a savory scone recipe you can make and enjoy fresh or freeze and reheat to enjoy when you're pressed for time. They make for a hearty meal any time of day and a great way to use leftover Easter ham.

Ham & Cheese Scones
Prep time: 20 min
Bake time: 20-25 min
Total time: 40-45 min
Serves: 8
Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus 1/4 cup for kneading)
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • Ā½ tsp salt
  • Ā½ cup Hansenā€™s Dairy Butter*
  • 2 cups Bongards Fancy Shredded Cheddar Cheese* (divided into 1 cup servings)
  • 1 cup Beelerā€™s Ham* cut into Ā½-inch chunks
  • 1 cup Hansenā€™s Dairy Heavy Cream*
Note: Recipe works best when butter, ham, cheese and cream are cold.
*Items that can be purchased at Hansenā€™s Dairy Stores
Directions
  • Preheat oven to 400F.
  • Mix flour, baking powder and salt in large mixing bowl.
  • Break up butter into small pieces and add to dry mix.
  • Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work butter into flour until it forms coarse crumbs.
  • Add ham and 1 cup of the cheese; mix until evenly distributed.
  • Make a ā€˜wellā€™ in the middle of the flour mix; pour cream into well and stir until mix forms a soft dough.
  • Place on lightly floured surface and knead 3-4 times or until dough comes together.
  • Form dough into a 10-inch circle or until dough is about 1 inch thick; cut into 8 wedges.
  • Place on parchment-lined baking pan, keeping wedges separated.
  • Bake in 400F oven for 20 minutes or until firm to touch and scones start turning golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  • Return to oven to bake another 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
