Friends,

Do you remember when "network" wasn't a verb?

I do. When I was growing up, a network was only a noun. It described a system of interrelated parts: like the old Bell Telephone network, with its bricks-and-mortar switching stations and millions of miles of copper wire; or the concrete-and-asphalt interstate highway network; or the television networks (just a handful back then!) with their affiliate stations scattered all across the country.

But then came the Internet, allowing people to communicate not only along established pathways, but willy-nilly, in all directions. Suddenly, everyone was - potentially - a node in an infinite number of networks. "Networking" became a thing, with each of us attending to our many groupings of friends, acquaintances and business associates. The online world is so vast and complex that sometimes businesses or organizations hold "networking events," so folks can get acquainted in the old-fashioned way, face-to-face.

It may surprise you to know that the Bible has its own concept of networking. "Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it,” writes Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:27. Speaking of all the different parts of the human body, he points out that one part is useless on its own. We're networked together in Christ. We all need each other.

And how does a person become a part of this great spiritual network? Through baptism. This Sunday we'll celebrate the joy of baptizing Philip Duncan George Allison into the Christian faith. Young Philip is the son of Cicely and William Allison, and the grandson of Duncan and Juliet Rose.

The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the oldest networks going. And it's by far the best. Come join us in worship, as we welcome our newest member of the church!

Pastor Carl
The Sacrament of Baptism
Sunday, January 20

Being baptized on Sunday is Philip Duncan George Allison, the son of Cecily and William Allison. Baptismal sponsors are Christopher and Allison Hefferan.

In music this week, Music Director Jim Goldsworthy will play several pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Jim's piano solo is: Children's Corner, V. The little shepherd by Claude Debussy.
Hope you will join us for Sunday morning worship to hear Pastor Carl's sermon, " Baby's First Network ", based on 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 and to witness the Sacrament of Baptism.
2019 Nomination Ballot
for Election of Officers at LPC

In the Presbyterian Church, the members of the congregation are given the privilege and responsibility of electing individuals who will serve the church as leaders in the offices of Elder and Deacon. The Nominating Committee is working to develop a slate of nominees to be voted upon at the Annual Meeting of the Congregation and Corporation. Please assist us by giving prayerful consideration to the nomination of those individuals you feel have demonstrated gifts of leadership and a commitment to the life and ministry of LPC.

Elders and Deacons serve for two-year terms; Nominating Committee serves for one-year term; Audit Committee serves for a one-year term.

Who can be nominated? A nominee must be a member of LPC, a faithful participant in the worship and program life of the church, and a good steward demonstrated by being a regular contributor to the operation of the church and its ministries. A summary of responsibilities of the officers and nominating committee can be found below:

  • Ruling Elders “are persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. They are chosen by the congregation to strengthen and nurture its faith and life, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.” (Book of Order, G-2.0301) Elders comprise the Session moderated by the Pastor, lead ministry councils and committees, serve communion and are given the opportunity to be lay readers.
  • Deacons “as set forth in Scripture, fulfill a ministry of compassion, witness and service, sharing the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.” (Book of Order, G-2.0201) The Board of Deacons is staffed by the Pastor and called upon to serve communion and to lead the ministries of worship, congregational care and service. They are also given the opportunity to be lay readers.
  • Nominating Committee - The members of the Nominating Committee, four of whom are selected from the congregation at large and of who are charged with preparing a slate of church officers to be voted upon by the congregation at a Congregational Meeting.
  • Audit Committee – Certain committees require specific gifts and skills given by God. This committee seeks those with experience in the world of finance.
