When It Comes to a Career, Purpose Is Everything!

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” — Annie Dillard

The average person over their lifetime will spend about 90,000 hours at work, or approximately one-third of their life; therefore, choosing a career can be one of life’s most important decisions.

Prioritizing one’s happiness and a sense of fulfillment is key to making the right choice.

What drives you?

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

These are questions to consider when choosing a path with purpose.

A purpose-driven career is one that you feel passionate about and skilled in and reflects your own unique interests and abilities. Discovering what excites you, whether it be a job, organization, or mission, will help you on your way to a purpose-driven career.

Passion + Skills = Purpose

“Joy” is a word William Pierce uses to describe how he feels about information technology.

A student at Phoenix College, William is interested in enrolling in the college’s newly accredited information technology (IT) bachelor’s degree program.

“I find the greatest joy in expanding my knowledge of networking and cybersecurity,” he says. “Once I determined what I wanted to do, it was easy to get started.”

In any discipline, skill development is critical.

Because IT is a big field, William is interested in diversifying his skills as much as possible and seeking out as many opportunities as he can for support.

“The fact that there are so many things to learn about when it comes to IT is my favorite part,” he says. “What brought me to Phoenix College was the amount of options I had for courses. There were lots of options for IT-focused careers and plenty of support available from counselors and advisors to keep me on track with my learning.”

With so many IT subcategories, William finds the bachelor’s degree program at Phoenix College to be the most inviting, as it would allow him to explore more areas of IT and apply this knowledge to future positions, where he could then tailor his expertise over a lifetime of career learning and advancement.

“I have met incredible professors and peers at Phoenix College, and all of the staff are willing to help however they can,” says William. “Everyone I have interacted with has had my best interest in mind.”
