Back To School

Traffic Safety

Fairfax County Public Schools start back up this Monday, August 22nd! We need to help keep our children safe and SLOW DOWN in school zones. FCPS and FCPD would like everyone to practice the 5 S's of traffic safety:

  1. Speed Limits, school zones are marked as 25 MPH 30 minutes prior to school starting and remain on 30 minutes after dismissal.
  2. Stop Signs, come to a full stop and always assume that the pedestrian is going to cross whether they have the right-of-way or not.
  3. School Buses, drivers must stop when the red lights are flashing on a school bus when there are no raised medians or walls between their travel lanes and the school bus.
  4. Safe Stopping, please load and unload children in the designated Kiss and Ride locations, or from designated, safe parking locations.
  5. Seatbelts, children need to be seat-belted until the car reaches its location and has fully stopped.

If interested, free yellow Slow Down yard signs can be picked up at my office anytime during regular business hours.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Free & Reduced-Price Meals (FRM)

As of July 1, the US Department of Agriculture pandemic program to provide no-cost meals to all public school students has ended. This school year, parents will either need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits, here.

Students will be required to enter their cafeteria PIN number at the cash register in order to receive their meals. You should have received an email from Food and Nutrition Services that includes your child’s pin.

The best way to purchase meals (and additional food items) is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account online. Money should be loaded on your child’s MySchoolBucks account prior to the first day of school and can be uploaded here.

Critical Need for O Blood Donations

Inova Blood Donor Services has less than a two-day supply of O blood on the shelves to support our patients. They are asking that all O donors make an appointment today or walk-in to one of our local donor centers. I donate blood as often as I can, and urge you to donate too!

To schedule an appointment with INOVA click here or call 1-866-256-6372.

You can also give blood at the American Red Cross, as they are another great source that is always in need of blood donations.
