CCSC Outfits 4,253 Students,

Helps Low-Income Families

You and CCSC provided 4,253 students, pre-K through 12th grade, with brand-new school supplies, backpacks, and clothing gift cards at the recent Back To School Community Event.

CCSC’s Back To School program has been helping struggling low-income families with school supplies since 1986. Hundreds of volunteers work each year from March through early August to help students have what they need to succeed on the first day of school.

“This means a lot to me, coming here. We struggle every year around this time," Shana C., a mom of two, said. "If I save money in one spot, like this, I can have money in another place that I need it. It’s a blessing. One year I missed it (BTS), and I felt like crying."

"It feels good to have new stuff," said 11-year-old Jeremy T.

“What we provide helps these children to walk into school with confidence," Leisa Novak, chair of the 2026 Back To School Committee, said. "It makes a difference."

"I love seeing our clients' faces, how excited they are, especially the kids," Courtney Lerch, who will be the 2027 Back To School chair, said. "I love that the students are starting school excited, not worried. That way they can focus on learning."

"Back To School is made possible by the support of our donors and hundreds of volunteers, many who return year after year," CCSC Youth Services Manager Lauren Walker said. "I am thankful for the dedication and leadership of our volunteer committee: Leisa Novak (Chair), Priscilla Aguilar, Sarah Ayala, Laura Bartolotta, Maria Berretta, Jessica Canizales, Terri Drabik-O'Reilley, Amy Holmes, Perla Kenley, Courtney Lerch (Vice Chair), Meredith Philipp and Anne Stewart."

"Thanks also go out to the staff and congregations of Faith Lutheran Church, our host site for the Back To School Community Event, and Bellaire United Methodist Church, our host site for Back To School registration," Walker added.

August is Make-A-Will Month

Are you up to date with your estate planning? Have you made a plan for the people you love and the organizations you believe in?

One way to leave an impactful legacy is to donate to an organization that matters to you.

There are many ways you can use your will to benefit a nonprofit whose mission is important to you—you can give cash, stock, real estate, and more.

Donating to CCSC's Legacy Society, in whatever way and amount you are comfortable with, is a way to shape the future with your intentions. It defines one of the ways you will be remembered and helps ensure that CCSC can continue to help Houstonians in crisis and reduce the effects of poverty in our community.

For more information about the CCSC Legacy Society, visit our website HERE or contact Senior Director of Development Sara Pybus at spybus@ccschouston.org or 713-961-3993.

Audit Offers Transparency

to CCSC Funders, Partners

Each year, Christian Community Service Center invites the firm of Blazek & Vetterling to perform a full audit of CCSC’s finances so we can fully report our financial information to funders, donors, and our community.

“CCSC performs an audit each year and then posts it on the website as we believe strongly in full financial transparency,” CCSC Finance Director Judie Kochenower said. “Our auditors, Blazek & Vetterling, are highly respected in the nonprofit sector and have performed the audit for over 20 years.”

“CCSC is strengthened by the individuals who share their financial skills by serving on the Finance Committee of the CCSC Board. We thank them,” CCSC President & CEO Michelle Shonbeck said.

CCSC audits are submitted to the Better Business Bureau, our funders and partners, and national charity review organizations. To see a copy of the 2025 Audit, visit our website HERE.
