3rd Annual Pizza Box Tops Project... A huge success!

On August 16th, student volunteers from throughout the township participated in the annual Town of Smithtown Youth &

Community Alliance " Pizza Box Top Project." This a youth empowerment initiative to change adult attitudes about selling and providing alcohol to minors.

The student volunteers placed approximately 1,200 prevention messaging stickers on pizza boxes and take out bags from the following pizzerias; Gino's Pizza in Kings Park, MeMa's in Commack, Monte's in Smithtown, Branchinelli's; and Three Bambino's in Hauppauge. Participating Pizzerias are recognized for their desire to combat the buying of alcohol to minors and we want to showcase these businesses as partners in this effort.

Youth Bureau's Successful Summer Programs

Feelings and Friendships Program

For the second summer in a row, elementary school aged students participated in "Feelings and Friendships," a program designed to increase social skills. This three week interactive program included games that focused on resiliency, problem solving, and assertiveness skills.

This program was held in the Horizons Center Community Room, AND we had the opportunity to bring the program to campers at BEST Learning Center in Hauppauge.

High School Study Skills

For the third summer in a row, the Youth Bureau offered a High School Study Skills Boot Camp!

High School students learned advanced note-taking; time management; and useful study apps, in this interactive program!

This program can also be offered in High Schools and Middle Schools throughout the school year, please contact Cynthia Grimley for more information.

Middle School Readiness

Students getting ready to enter Middle School in September benefited from this popular new Youth Bureau program.

Students practiced using an agenda; organizing a backpack; and learning to quickly open a combination lock... all in preparation for entering Middle School this year. Participants had many questions about beginning in a new school, and had a lot of fun preparing together.

Upcoming Programs - at a Middle School near YOU!

The Youth Bureau will again be offering TWO popular programs during the school year at all Middle Schools throughout Smithtown Township (including school districts: Smithtown, Kings Park, Commack & Hauppauge).

Babysitting/Employment Readiness Program: This 4 week engaging program prepares participants to become safe, confident babysitters! Students enjoy hands on activities with our RealCare Babies .

Middle School Study Skills Program: This program focuses on note-taking techniques; organizational strategies; time management; and useful study skills apps.

Stand Up For Homeless Event

August 2019

The Smithtown Youth Bureau and Horizons Counseling and Education Center participated in the 12th annual Stand up For Homeless Event at Suffolk County Community College on August 28th. The Youth Bureau donated backpacks stocked with school supplies, and Horizons donated diapers, baby wipes, and baby food.

Homeless individuals and families were provided transportation by bus to take advantage of this wonderful resource fair. This event is presented by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services to provide assistance and support services to Suffolk County residents in need.
