  • Co-workers will knock before entering
  • No more floating heads behind you during Zoom meetings
  • Lunch breaks have meaning again
  • Bringing back the joy in TGIF
  • Get a chance to miss your family, pets, housemates
  • Conversations that will not be interrupted by dog barks
  • No more tantrums from "co-workers"
  • New view
  • Listening to the radio as you ride to the office

Get outside and move

In light of our current environment, one positive I have first handedly experienced is the fact that bicycling around town feels safer due to less traffic on the road. I suggest to folks stuck at home to dust off the bikes and ride somewhere and explore our trial system. I continue to ride my bike to work and find it easy to maintain 6’ of social distance among the passing interactions I have with others on the trail.

Engage for Behavior Change
Tiny Habits: Small Changes that Add UP!
You change behavior without climbing an emotional mountain! Adopting tiny habits that lead to small changes add up over time. In his book, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything , BJ Fogg offers a simple method for creating new habits. Three simple elements include:

1. Use your motivation for change
2. Harness your existing abilities and strengths
3. Prompt or remind yourself to do the desired behavior.

Celebrate your tiny successes! Positive mindset leads to improved perception of yourself and your habits, building confidence for continued change.

So what does this look like in action? Do three squats after you wash your hands. Then, give yourself a high-five each time.

Here's a quick exercise you can do to check whether you are in a negative or positive mindset about yourself. Take two minutes and write down the negative comments you say to yourself about any aspect of life -- work, family, friendships, hobbies, etc. Then, take two minutes to write down the positive things you thing about yourself in the same area(s) of life. Is your negative/critical list longer than your positive? How can you balance it out.

For more details check out the 12-minute interview with BJ Fogg.
