Abi & Matthew Fitzsimons Missionaries,

iReachAfrica at Tariro

2024 February 2024

We're Back in MOZ!

We have been back in Mozambique nearly three weeks and even though we are coming back to familiar surroundings and a strong support network of friends and family (Matt’s parents being down the road), lots of change has happened. Matt will not return to the farm work as we have taken on the opportunity of leading a Christian technical training school. The name of the school is Tariro and it has been running for a number of years and provides a 2-year program for young adults to train in a vocational subject (e.g. metalwork or agriculture). The aim of the school is to facilitate and equip graduates in gaining employment and to nurture a learning environment rooted in the love and truth of Jesus. Students have lessons in their chosen vocation as well as lessons in Portuguese, English, Math, basic accountancy and biblical business ethics. The total number of students currently enrolled is 24 with 4 teachers (plus other site staff).

More details about the school can be read on the website:

The location of the school is back in close proximity to where I (Abi) originally lived and worked (with iReachAfrica) when I first arrived in Mozambique. We have moved into a house which is on the Tariro school site. Highlights of the house so far are the amount of exotic birds that can be seen when sitting on the beautiful veranda. Lowlights are two rats and two snakes spotted inside!

Matt will have a full-time commitment at the school and is currently learning from and observing Terri, who has been the Director for Tariro for a number of years. I will gradually build up involvement in some aspects of school life (daily prayer meetings, finance administration, etc) and will also continue to work with the education programs at iReachAfrica on a part-time basis - thankful that this time it’s just a 5 minute drive down the road!

At the moment, the majority of my time is focussing on Emily (just reaching 6 months!), who seems to have made a good impression on our Mozambican friends and colleagues as she can’t stop smiling (and sweating due to the high temperatures)!

Please agree with us for these prayer requests:

  • for us as a family as we settle into new routines
  • for Matthew as he steps into his new role with Tariro
  • the process of Emily's residency card

Thank you for your support, thoughts, and friendship,

Matt, Abi and Emily
