Getting Back on Track - Sort Of
Surprisingly, getting back on track and on schedule hasn't been as easy as evacuating for Dorian was. Should I admit I haven't completely unpacked my car yet? However disorienting and inconvenient this has been for many of us, I'll keep my complaining to myself and save my concern for the people of the northern Bahamas.

NOTE: When you use the On the Calendar, Auditions, and Calls for Artists sections, PLEASE verify dates and times until everyone has checked in and updated their schedules. It never hurts to verify, anyway.

Some weeks Arts Blast seems to be all about art or theater or music — I haven't figured out how that happens — but this week it seems to be all about news. I'll toss in my own thoughts here on working with the retiring Jill Roberts: She is professionalism personified. There were times she called on me to be her eyes and ears in Indian River County, an exciting call to action. Before election nights were online, I sat in the IRC elections office while votes were being counted, relaying the information to Roberts in the Fort Pierce studio. During the 2004 hurricanes, she asked me for first-hand reports on the flooding in Vero Beach. It was quite a kick to hear from one of my former media colleagues in the Virgin Islands that he'd heard my report on NPR!

Have a brew or two to celebrate 100 years of the Press Journal while reading a story from an earlier Arts Blast, written when Larry Reisman and Kelly Rogers were at Vero Beach Book Center.

Back in the old days in my hometown, newsmen from the local paper hung out at the Peanut Bar across the street from the Eagle building. Beer by the pitcher, peanut shells always underfoot. That was then. Now it's specialty beers, not only named for the Press Journal but MADE by the Press Journal staff! It's at Walking Tree Brewery in Vero Beach, Sept. 13. Read about the event here: https://www.tcpalm.com/story/entertainment/whattodoin772/2019/08/26/off-record-event-walking-tree-brewery-celebrates-centennial/2087036001/

Did you know that there is no blue pigment in bird fe athers? We see blue because the microstructure of the feather reflects the blue while absorbing all other colors. Thus, when the light strikes the bird just right, we see dazzling blues.

Jill Roberts Hangs Up Her Mic
After covering Treasure Coast news for more than 30 years, Jill Roberts is hanging up her mic and headphones and heading north. Friday is the final sign-off for Roberts, 57.

Since being hired by WQCS in 1987, many things have changed for Roberts in reporting Treasure Coast news. “(Then) there really was no internet component of our coverage. Now we can engage with people who aren’t even listening during an emergency through our website, Facebook and Twitter.”

What hasn’t changed is her job description: “Cover issues on the Treasure Coast and produce long-form pieces for air, prepare for emergencies, provide ‘breaking news’ information during evacuations or accidents and, of course, hurricanes.”

In more than three decades, memorable stories and moments were inevitable. Roberts described hers: “I have flown on a B-17 bomber, traveled under the sea on a tourist sub and interviewed famous people from former presidents to entertainment stars. However, covering the Honor Flight and going with 100 WW II veterans to Washington DC for the day to visit the WW II memorial was life changing. Watching the Lake Okeechobee water releases grow from discussions that used to take place around a conference table to one that now overflows auditoriums may be what I remember most. Following up on a phone message about a ‘confusing ballot’ in Palm Beach County in 2000 was a real lesson in serendipity. Living through Frances and Jeanne showed the spirit of the Treasure Coast. The Sept. 11 th attacks and the aftermath and the spirit of the people on the Treasure Coast is also something I won’t forget.”
Co-workers as well as listeners will miss her. Joe Lenartiene, WQCS operations manager, has worked with Roberts as long as he’s been with the station. “Working with Jill for the last 29 years has been a pleasure. I’ve learned so much. I will miss her dedication and her passion for the community. Although I will miss her, I wish her well on her next adventure.”

Lisa Baxter said she has always been in awe of Roberts’ passion and dedication for her job, noting her “commitment to do ‘whatever it takes.’ I was especially in awe of how she would work around the clock, sleeping at the station during the hurricanes, totally driven to keep our community safe. Jill’s talent at covering news that matters and commitment and love for the Treasure Coast will be greatly missed!”

Station Manager Chris Puorro “knew” Roberts even before he took over as manager. “I had heard Jill’s voice on NPR long before I got to WQCS and always enjoyed her reporting, and it was a pleasure to spend a year and a half working with her here on the Treasure Coast. She will be missed!”

No surprise, what Roberts has enjoyed most about her time with WQCS has been “being able to spend time in the Treasure Coast Community, learning about the people, tradition and problems and being able to tell those stories.”

Roberts began her news career at a small station in DuBois, Pa., “covering news and spinning records.” She’ll be packing up her dog, Rocky, and heading back to those Pennsylvania roots to work for a “hyper-local online news site in my hometown of Clarion, Pennsylvania.”

WQCS, 88.9FM, is the regional Public Radio affiliate, located on the Fort pierce campus of Indian River State College.
Carl Hiaasen Chats With Mike Lupica
Two old friends will be sitting down together for a catchup conversation Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. and we’re all invited to listen in. Mike Lupica, in town with his latest book, Strike Zone, has been a guest author at Vero Beach Book Center several times, always introduced by his buddy Carl Hiaasen. The events are so popular with local residents that it’s necessary to set up their chairs onstage at St. Edward’s School’s Performing Arts Center.

Lupica and Hiaasen have a lot in common, according to Book Center spokesperson Cynthia Callander. “They have both been awarded the prestigious Damon Runyon Award, … and share mutual respect plus the love of writing popular books for kids and their families.” Listen to a podcast of an earlier conversation: https://soundcloud.com/compass-media/the-mike-lupica-podcast-episode-121-carl-hiaasen .

Callander said, “Lupica is a well-known, prominent sportswriter and broadcaster. He’s a syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News with his popular Sunday column, Shooting from the Lip. His newest release, STRIKE ZONE, is a  timely and heartfelt follow-up to his #1 New York Times bestseller Heat, about a young baseball prodigy and his immigrant family living in today's America.”
This review was posted in School Library Journal: "Readers will find themselves rooting for Michael as he struggles with the loss of his father, stumbles into his first boy-girl relationship, and yearns to play baseball. The sports scenes are especially well written; fittingly, the euphoric finale takes place at Yankee Stadium. [Lupica] keeps his lively plot on course with humor, crisp dialogue, and true-to-life characters.”

Callander said, “Strike Zone is best for kids ten and up, but many of Lupica's novels are for even younger reading levels. Lupica is also slotted to write new entries in Robert B Parker's Sunny Randall series. So, Lupica’s visit is for all ages.”

The event is free and open to the public. Mike Lupica's STRIKE ZONE is available at the Vero Beach Book Center or by phone, 772 569 2050. His other books will be available at the event. A brief Q&A is expected after the presentation.

Carl Hiaasen was born and raised in Florida. He is the the author of fourteen novels, including the best-selling Razor Girl, Bad Monkey, Skinny Dip, Strip Tease, and Lucky You, and five best-selling children’s books, Hoot, Flush, Scat, Chomp and Skink. He also writes a weekly opinion column for The Miami Herald. The most recent collection of his columns is Dance of the Reptiles, edited by Diane Stevenson..
The Press Journal at 100
(reprinted from an earlier Arts Blast)
Is it a coincidence that Vero Beach is turning 100 at the same time as the newspaper that has documented its growth? Probably not. People depend on a free press to let them know what’s happening around them. The Press Journal was born from a merger of the Vero Press, first published Sept. 13, 1919, and the newer Vero Journal.

At 100, a healthy dose of nostalgia is called for and a couple of longtime newspaper staffers were up for the job. Larry Reisman, community editor and columnist for 34 years, and Kelly Rogers, who began her career at the Press Journal 30 years ago and is now visuals editor, did the research and pulled out what they felt had to be included in a city and newspaper retrospective.

Reisman said, “It was not easy to narrow 100 years of a community to about 144 pages.” They began by looking at a timeline of major events. “Did we have pictures or pages that covered the story? We wanted a diverse set of images, representing many groups, events and traditions.”

Quality photojournalism was import, he said. That’s where Rogers comes in. Things have changed a since her first day on the job as a darkroom technician. “I hand-developed black-and-white film every day, and hand printed those as well. We had a small machine that developed color slide film, 5 rolls at a time. It took about 45 minutes for that film to process.” This might sound like science fiction to digital photographers but consider that it was only 30 years ago.

Around 2000, Rogers said, the newsroom went fully digital. “Today, as part of our digital-first effort, all of our photographers are outfitted with two camera bodies that shoot both pictures and video, a variety of lenses/focal lengths, a laptop, microphones, wires, wires and more wires.”

Reisman’s view of the area has broadened by necessity. “When I got here, if you were a mile or two outside city limits, you were in the middle of nowhere – citrus, cows and snakes. It’s quite different (now).” The growth has been fairly orderly from the centers of Vero Beach and Sebastian, he said. Still, “Despite county leaders’ best intentions, traffic the past couple of years seems to have outpaced some roads’ ability to handle it.”

There’s a bright side to the growth, Reisman said. “Many wealthy people have moved to our community and been philanthropic, building amazing things at such amenities as Riverside Theatre, the Museum or Art, Cleveland Clinic Indian River, McKee Botanical Garden and more.” They’ve also helped many people in need through community agencies.

With 65 years of service between them, neither Reisman or Rogers is hinting at retirement.

With the development of a 24/7, digital first newsroom, what might a bicentennial book look like? Rogers wonders if there will still be books at all, or something that hasn’t even been developed yet. “I sure hope we still have books. If nothing else, I hope that in the last 30 years, I’ve organized enough visual content within our organization that some of it can be used to help remember this time in our beautiful little city by the sea.”
Pineapple Playhouse - Murder Can Be a Benefit
The plot for laughter at St. Lucie Community Theatre’s Pineapple Playhouse is ripped from the script of a dying soap opera called The Bold and the Young , and the hapless characters may not make it to the final episode before themselves being canceled by a murderer. On Wednesday, September 25 th , the director, crew, and the actors playing the actors in this hilarious St. Lucie Community Theatre production of The Bold, the Young, and the Murdered will be donating the entire proceeds of the 8 p.m. performance to benefit The Inner Truth Project.
For one night only, the entire theatre will turn itself over to the service of The Inner Truth Project, a local not for profit organization founded because there is no shame in living through any type of sexual abuse, violence or rape. The Inner Truth Project is dedicated to providing services to survivors of rape and sexual assault through free peer-led support groups, therapies, and community outreach. The volunteer actors and crew of the production of The Bold, the Young, and the Murdered are donating the proceeds of the entire evening’s performance to the organization as a way of showing support and collaboration between the two nonprofit organizations.
In addition to the evening of hilarity and live theatre, representatives of The Inner Truth Project will be on hand to share information on their own organization, its mission, and the services provided to members of the community. Volunteers from St. Lucie Community Theatre will also be on hand to prepare and host a pre-show gala beginning at 7 p.m., featuring free hors d’oeuvres, wine, and a chance to mix and mingle before the opening curtain at 8 p.m.
The Pineapple Playhouse is the perfect setting for this particular comedy, and with only 117 seats, every seat is a great one, so they’ll sell out quickly. To get your tickets for this very special Wednesday, September 25 th performance of The Bold, the Young, and the Murdered , written by Don Zolidis, call the Pineapple Playhouse Box Office at (772) 465-0366.
