According to Webster, the definition of intention is “a determination to act in a certain way.” At the beginning of a new year, we all set intentions (or resolutions). Given my track record in years past, I’ve decided to create monthly intentions, with the hope of a better success rate. For January, I’m keeping it simple – my intention or goal for the month is to make my bed every day. I know, I know… it only took me until I was 41!

I laughed at myself about committing to something seemingly so basic, but, almost a month into my intention, I’ve realized this simple goal has helped make noticeable change. I’ve removed clutter from my sleeping area. I am sleeping so much better at night, which in turn is helping me wake up earlier, feeling more refreshed. I have had more time in the day, and my productivity has increased. This simple building block has started to build a strong foundation.

I’ve taken this approach to my practice as well. Daily sun salutations have helped me feel grounded and strong. I am determined to act and feel this way, to return to the basics when I feel overwhelmed and ungrounded.

Maybe the overall goal is a challenging pose or a clean attic, but the approach is the same. One block at a time. It’s a slow start, but, if you do the work, the rest will fall into place.

Hope your new year is off to a happy and healthy start. Keep the momentum going and share your goals with us!

With gratitude,
Rae

Cabin fever got you down? Time to hit the yoga playground! Yoga asana can sometimes get quite serious, but the act of play can certainly enrich our knowledge of self (svadhyaya), so it seems imperative to add a healthy dose of play to our work on the mat. This workshop will involve creative individual, partner, and group work, so come ready to learn, discover, and play well with others in this non-competitive and fun practice!
