Message from the Board Chair

Dear Friends,

Our 25 students are back in school following a summer break. Due to the pandemic, they face the same challenges of remote learning as students in the United States. Casa de Kids produces leaders for tomorrow. Although our students are expected to work part-time, many jobs have disappeared requiring our organization to assist with basic needs including food, housing and emotional support. Therefore we are asking for your help to allow our students to remain healthy, to thrive and succeed despite these challenging times.

We take pride in reporting that Jose, our recent medical school graduate, delivered his first baby and is an example of the caliber of young men and women Casa de Kids produce as future front-runners in their communities.

Student Ingenuity

Pablo Aragon has graduated from college a year ago. He secured a teaching job last fall here in Oaxaca. Pablo lost his job due to the pandemic and is waiting in his hometown for it to subside. While at home, he's been busy working in the fields with his father, and creating beautiful embroidery with his grandmother.

He learned to embroider by watching his 74 year-old grandmother embroider beautiful blouses and tablecloths. While waiting for his next teaching position, he is selling his own embroidery work.

Students' Update

In addition to our regular students, we have two new students coming from remote regions for classes. Drew has known these two for many years, from a local orphanage. Emanuel wants to be a chef, and Santiago aspires to become an architect. Casa de Kids will do all we can to help make this a reality, as we are for others.

The economic impact has effected the villages and the job possibilities here in Oaxaca city. We are determined to maintain our current student base and on course with their studies.

But we can only do this with a little bit of help. You can make this a reality with a one-time donation or a small donation each month!

Our August Graduates!

Montserrat has graduated as a Veterinarian and is excited to be working in a local veterinary clinic before she realizes the dream of having her own clinic.

Laura will become an elementary school teacher this August. She is the only one of eight siblings pursuing higher education.

Why Oaxaca?

Oaxaca City is the capital of the state of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-ha-kah). While our state is famous for native and culinary arts, it ranks as the country's third poorest and has one of the highest illiteracy rates. Its mountainous terrain makes commerce and education difficult, attracting many seeking a better life to Oaxaca City.
