Hi Neighbors,
As bittersweet as it is to see the summer break come to a close, it sure is exciting to return to the classroom for another year of learning. The opportunity to make new friends, build on old friendships, and create new memories is all part of what makes going back to school so great. For our students, teachers, and faculty, I want to wish you all a fun, safe, and productive school year. My office and I are here to support our families in every way possible to promote learning, community, and safety.
The 2023-24 Council session has begun. One of the Council's first major actions was to avert a strike by our two largest employee unions representing over 4,500 city staff. These are workers who operate our airport, feed our elderly at community centers, maintain our parks and roads, and generally keep our city running. A strike in our city would have been very costly and even more devastating to our community.
Our workers will receive a 14.5% increase over three years, and 8 weeks of paid family leave. This is an investment in our workforce, our city, and ultimately our residents. With the rising cost of living in San Jose and the region, we had to take action to ensure our workers can afford to live in the amazing city they help build and maintain. I remain committed to protecting our community and ensuring we provide essential services to our residents.
Lastly, I have upcoming events! Check them out below alongside all my recent community work.
Best,
