We seek God's healing love and share that love with all
by growing in relationship with God, each other, and our neighbors.
|
|
About a month ago, more than 30 St. Andrew’s members helped bring God’s healing love to people in our community alongside new friends from St. James United Methodist Church. Hundreds of neighbors came by to share a meal; pick up groceries, diapers, and clothing; and wash their clothes at the laundromat across from St. James. And our volunteers had a great time in the process.
Now, we have another opportunity to join St. James in a Connecting Community event, this time focused on getting kids ready to head back to school. On Saturday, Aug. 13, in shifts during the morning and afternoon, St. Andrew’s members will come to St. James to help provide school supplies and hygiene-related items for kids from two of our partner schools – Gordon Parks and Benjamin Banneker elementaries – as well as families from two schools that partner with St. James. We’ll also help distribute food, diapers, and clothing, and we’ll help people use the laundromat for Loads of Love.
This Sunday, July 24, Janet Kelley and Jean Kiene will be in the Jewell Room after the 8 and 10 a.m. services with sign-up sheets and more information. Or you can contact Janet directly. I hope you’ll consider giving a couple of hours to help students from our partner schools get ready to go back to class. (No donations are needed for this Connecting Community event.)
In addition, you have a couple more opportunities to help students and families at Gordon Parks Elementary. Mentors and volunteers are needed at the school now and going forward; contact Karen Lundgren to find out more. And in the coming weeks, you’ll have the chance to support Gordon Parks families by donating the cost of a uniform for a child. Stay tuned for more details!

We're open for in-person worship! Worship is also livestreamed and daily prayer is available on Facebook Live at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m
Sunday at 8 a.m. – Rite I Holy Eucharist – Watch here
For those who find spiritual comfort and strength in the rich Elizabethan language of centuries-old worship, our early-morning service of prayer, Scripture, a sermon, a musical solo, and time-honored hymns, is the perfect way to start your Sabbath.
Sunday at 10 a.m. – Rite II Holy Eucharist – Watch here
Worship the Lord in the beauty of Scripture, a sermon, and prayers for ourselves and our world. Glorious hymns, organ, and choral music intertwine with the spoken parts of our celebration. We offer online Children’s Chapel via Zoom before 10 a.m.; and in-person Sunday school during the 10 a.m. service.
Worship features contemporary music; tight, relevant preaching; a message for kids; and Holy Communion.
Daily at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m – Pray at 8
Join us on Facebook Live for Pray at 8. In just 10 to 15 minutes, you can stop, breathe, and find God’s refreshment to support you through your day or carry you on to bed. It’s a beautiful way to remember that God is our constant helper and strength.

Meet Bishop Diane; Explore Women’s Spirituality
As you may have seen from her Facebook posts, our bishop provisional, the Rt. Rev. Diane Jardine Bruce, has been everywhere in our diocese now, visiting each of our 48 congregations since coming to us in December. It’s one of her gifts and one of her passions – getting out there with people and building relationships that help us build God’s kingdom.
You have a chance to meet Bishop Diane yourself Sunday, Aug. 7, as our Northwest-Metro Deanery (the geographical grouping of congregations in this part of the diocese) holds an old-fashioned church picnic. We’ll gather from 2 to 4 p.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd, 4947 NE Chouteau Dr, Kansas City, MO 64119. (Yes, it’s north of the river but just 22 minutes from St. Andrew’s.) Hotdogs and burgers will be provided, and attendees are asked to bring a side dish to share. There’s no cost, but you’re asked to RSVP so organizers can know how many hotdogs and burgers to cook.
The day before, our diocese will hold another gathering perfect for a reflective summertime – a chance for women to stop and take a breath in a daylong retreat led by Bishop Diane, “Cultivating Resilience in a Changing World.” Also hosted by Church of the Good Shepherd in the Northland, the retreat will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Retreat sessions will provide opportunities for quiet reflection, movement, exploring your creativity, and learning about developing women’s personal strength. The cost is $20, and registration is available here.

Pet Ministry Teams With Children's Ministry
Pet Ministry joined with Children’s Ministry in May and June and the pairing made a great match! In May, Children’s Ministry learned about and helped Lucky 13 Pet Rescue. Lucky 13 is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and aid of homeless and neglected dogs in the Kansas City metro and surrounding rural areas. Using 100 tennis balls donated by parishioners, the children made activity dog treat balls. Children braided at least 30 activity dog bones using fleece donated by Fabric of Life. In addition, donations of treats and toys were given to Lucky 13! At VBS in June, the children made 50 Rainbow Bridge keychains to give to any parishioner who has recently lost a beloved pet. What a great way for our children to talk about their pets, learn about pets in need, think about the church’s pet families, and contribute their time and talent doing service that helped so many!

Anchored at St. Andrew's
I’m Janis Haneke. Many of you may recognize my name through the Pray at 8s. I reside in Central Kansas, and wish I could worship with you in person. That said, I’m incredibly thankful for St. Andrew’s online presence!
I received my psychology degree through Marymount College. I was Roman Catholic until my daughter knew some of my concerns about the Roman Catholic faith and encouraged me to watch what was then the 8-1-8 Prayers. I also reached out to Fr. John Spicer who spent precious time answering my many questions and provided me resources to read about the Episcopal tradition. Many in the church at St. Andrew’s have helped me in my journey for three years now.
I’m currently a nurse (9 years). Previously, I worked as a probation officer and counselor for the court systems in Kansas working with sex offenders and gang members (26 years). I’m happy to be working in geriatric nursing now. I still provide counseling free to those in need.
I find our Episcopal faith meets what I believe and do: love everyone, no judgment, be the hands and feet of Christ. I hope to see you online and in prayer. May God continue to bless this community and use us all with the gifts He provides. Amen.

Just contact Mary Sanders ([email protected]; 816-523-1602, ext. 110) about arranging delivery.

Pandemic Precautions
To help us love one another, St. Andrew’s continues our policy of asking everyone older than 2 who enters the church or HJ’s either to be fully vaccinated or to wear a mask. Of course, many people will choose to take both precautions, which is perfectly appropriate. In worship, we invite you receive the Bread and Wine of Holy Communion either at standing stations, with the Wine served in individual cups, or at the altar rail, with the Wine served from a common chalice. At the rail, you may either sip or intinct (dip) the bread. As you greet others for the Peace or after worship, please be aware of their choices to wear or not wear a mask. If they aren’t masked, it’s OK to offer a handshake or a hug, but know they may prefer a bow or an elbow bump instead. If they are masked, assume that a contactless greeting is best.

Back-to-School Drive-Thru
Hygiene kits and back to school kits will be handed out. St. Andrew's volunteers will stand at the entrance to the drive-thru and will collect information from the people in the car. Two volunteers needed from 9 a.m. to noon.

Adult Christian Formation
"We have a policy of not limiting the theological reflection of St. Andrew's members. Groups don't have to get their materials approved by a central authority; in fact, we actively encourage members to start discussion groups that come from different perspectives.
