For over thirty years, Bunny Rosen was a high school special education teacher and tutor in the Westchester public schools. Today, she brings that same professionalism, passion, and dedication to her volunteer work with JFS, where she serves as an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor for refugee clients.

“As a member of the Greenwich community, I have long been aware of the good work of JFS,” Bunny shares. “Reading the JFS newsletter and learning of the important work JFS was doing with the immigrant community, I felt called to help.”

Her decision to join the ESL program was deeply personal. “I am studying Spanish and have a deep respect for the efforts of new language learners,” she explains. That empathy has shaped her approach to teaching and helped her connect with students from diverse backgrounds. “My experience with refugee clients has been eye-opening. I have had students from ten countries, speaking four different languages.”

Bunny’s classes are more than just lessons in grammar and vocabulary—they are lifelines to independence and integration. “I try to pick material that is useful for everyday living,” she says. “I teach vocabulary that is helpful at the supermarket, the doctor’s office, and the school. I incorporate group work where level two students assist level one students. We share stories of our families, and this is always a great conversation starter.”

One of her most memorable moments came when a student used her improved English skills to secure a job. “That was a proud and joyful moment,” Bunny recalls. “It showed how language can truly open doors.”

Through her work, Bunny has gained deep appreciation for the resilience and gratitude of her students. “They are truly thankful for the feeling of security. They love their children's schools, the libraries, the sports teams, and they appreciate the kindness shown to them by community members.”

Her experience has also deepened her sense of belonging. “Being an ESL teacher for JFS has made me feel part of the greater community—the Jewish community, the helping community, and the learning community.”

To those considering volunteering, Bunny offers heartfelt encouragement: “Take a look at what JFS does—there are so many opportunities, and several may fit your interests. It feels good to give back.”
