| | TLC Summer Includes Innovative Program for Refugee Community From Burma (Myanmar) | | TLC prides itself on its authentic and long standing community partnerships. One example is TLC’s partnership with the Karen Organization of San Diego (KOSD). During this time TLC and KOSD have worked together every summer to develop and facilitate programs for the youth that include heritage language and culture classes, community building, and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math). | |
“It’s a win-win-win situation...We love working together and learning from each other. And the big win is that the students love attending our summer programs.”
-Caren Holtzman, TLC Executive Director
| | | | A Field Trip Filled Summer for TLC High School Scholars | | Our inaugural class of six TLC High School Scholars graduated this summer—heading to Mesa College, SDSU, Cal State San Marcos, and more! Before college began, they enjoyed unforgettable summer adventures, from a VIP San Diego Zoo visit (thanks to partner Mary Bernischke and the Lucky Duck Foundation) to paragliding, hiking, and the county fair. With the support of mentors and volunteers, our scholars are launching into adulthood with confidence, plans, and housing secured. | |
Volunteer Spotlight: Kim Timberlake
TLC’s 'Queen of Games’
| | For the past several months, volunteer Kim Timberlake has brought joy, laughter, and learning to TLC students — earning the nickname “Queen of Games” from STREAM Lab participants. From teaching board games that build patience and teamwork to chaperoning high school scholars on a zoo tour, Kim has made a lasting impact on students and staff alike. “It’s been a super positive experience,” she shared. “All the good parts of teaching without the responsibility.” | |

Toward a Practical Approach to Inclusion and Belonging
| | As we kick off a new school year, TLC is diving deep into what it really means to create inclusive, welcoming classrooms where every student can thrive. Traditionally, “inclusion” focused narrowly on students in special education, but today, educators recognize that true inclusion goes far beyond that. | |
