Dear Ones,

By the time you receive this, I will be en-route to Minnesota. I'm picking up my mother's car and will roadtrip it back to AZ with my sister. It is my eldest son's 'inheritance' from my mom because he will turn 16 this fall - help me, Jesus!

I haven't done this roadtrip in almost exactly 19 years. That's when I moved here originally after seminary to take a job at Saint Barnabas in Scottsdale. I thought I'd be here for a few little years, but now it's going on 20 years!

When I drove down here last time, I had found a woman on Craigslist (!) who also needed to make their way to Denver from Minneapolis, so we shared the long 14 hour drive together and talked along the way. I remember cautiously telling her why I was moving to Arizona - you never know what people will make of you when you're a pastor! But we had a lovely and authentic conversation - and the upshot of her question to me was: "what if none of it's real?"

I had to do some soul-searching when she asked it...and what I came to was this: "what if it is?"

To believe in God, to follow Jesus, and to be inspired by the Holy Spirit makes my life better in a million ways large and small. Living in a state of mystery keeps me humble and hopeful. I can't prove any one of these entities, but I see the effect of them on my life and so I carry on seeking them and worshipping them and serving them. We can't have the answers, but we can have faith. And faith makes me a stronger human being in the face of so much pain in the world.

So if you sometimes too ask the 'What if..." questions, you're not alone. And I urge you to look at the other side of the coin too. Faith is the assurance of things not seen. How is your faith strengthening you in this season?

Para cuando recibas esto, estaré de camino a Minnesota. Voy a recoger el coche de mi madre y lo llevaré de vuelta a Arizona con mi hermana. Es la “herencia” de mi hijo mayor porque cumplirá 16 años este otoño - ¡ayúdame, Jesús!

No he hecho este roadtrip en casi exactamente 19 años. Fue cuando me mudé aquí originalmente después del seminario para tomar un trabajo en Saint Barnabas en Scottsdale. Pensé que estaría aquí por unos pocos años, ¡pero ya van 20 años!

Cuando conduje hasta aquí la última vez, había encontrado a una mujer en Craigslist (¡!) que también necesitaba hacer su camino a Denver desde Minneapolis, así que compartimos el largo viaje de 14 horas juntos y hablamos durante el camino. Recuerdo que le conté con cautela por qué me mudaba a Arizona: ¡nunca sabes lo que la gente va a pensar de ti cuando eres pastor! Pero tuvimos una conversación encantadora y auténtica, y el resultado de la pregunta que me hizo fue: «¿Y si nada de esto es real?».

Tuve que hacer un examen de conciencia cuando me lo preguntó... y llegué a la siguiente conclusión: «¿Y si lo es?»

Creer en Dios, seguir a Jesús y ser inspirado por el Espíritu Santo mejora mi vida de mil maneras, grandes y pequeñas. Vivir en un estado de misterio me mantiene humilde y esperanzado. No puedo probar ninguna de estas entidades, pero veo su efecto en mi vida y por eso sigo buscándolas, adorándolas y sirviéndolas. No podemos tener las respuestas, pero podemos tener fe. Y la fe me hace un ser humano más fuerte ante tanto dolor en el mundo.

Así que si a veces tú también te haces preguntas del tipo «Y si...», no estás solo. Y te insto a que mires también la otra cara de la moneda. La fe es la certeza de lo que no se ve. ¿Cómo te fortalece tu fe en esta temporada?

Can You Bring a Backpack?

Garfield Elementary students are heading back to school July 31st and we will need at least 60 back packs, filled with the following (and more if you’re able!):

1 personal pencil box or pouch

1 box of pencils

2 pink erasers

1 box of colored pencils (Crayola preferred)

1 box of washable markers (Crayola preferred)

1 box of crayons (Crayola preferred)

glue sticks

12-inch ruler

spiral-bound notebooks

composition notebooks

scissors

For July, the RE-Humanization Project invite you to two specific actions:

Learn ways to speak about your faith and how it guides you. If someone asked you how your faith impacts your life and decisions, what would you say? Start practicing your answers at home!
Call a Representative - make it a point to express yourself to your elected reps. Using the 5 calls app or just letting them know what it is you care about, our reps need to hear from us daily. Commit to sharing your hopes for our nation and community all month long!

Sandwich Ministry Needs Bread Please

Our summer exhibit in the Olney Gallery is a photographic and artistic history of our beloved Cathedral, as well as some of the people who worshipped here.

Prayers of the People

Oración de los Fieles

We pray for peace,

for goodwill among nations, and for the well-being of all people. We pray for our President and for the Congress, the Cabinet, and the Supreme Court. We pray for justice and peace, particularly in Gaza, Iran, and in Ukraine.

We ask your prayers for the poor,

the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison, particularly those who are being removed from this country without due process and those being removed in spite of being in legal immigration processes. We pray for all those who are afraid in these times.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, particularly those who have died in the flooding in Texas this week, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

We pray for: Kay & Jim, Surya, Jeff, Gloria, Karl, Jill, Jonathan, Merle, Charles, Sarah.

We give thanks for those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this week.

Oremos para la paz,

por la buena voluntad de naciones, y para el bienestar de todos pueblos. Rezamos por nuestro Presidente y por el Congreso, el Gabinete y el Tribunal Supremo. Rezamos por la justicia y la paz, especialmente en Gaza, Iran, y Ucrania.

Pedimos tus oraciones para los con recursos limitados,
