There is no Music Without "U"

|
Sure, it’s corny to say, but it is true. You – parents and community supporters are what make the music possible. Literally. With your help, we purchase music, hire coaches, and provide the foundation for our fantastic arts programs. GiveBig is right around the corner and we need your help to raise $5,000.

BHS Wins 2021 Support Music Merit Award
|
|
Ballard High School has once again been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. This is the third year in a row that BHS has been so recognized for its outstanding commitment to music education. The SupportMusic Merit Award recognizes individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Our directors went the extra mile this year in finding innovative ways to compensate for the challenges of teaching music in a virtual setting, and the NAMM Foundation has recognized the value of our program. As boosters, we are proud to support BHS, a school that consistently demonstrates its dedication to music education and a commitment to the role of music and arts in a well-rounded education.

Return to School
We were excited to find out that the school district will be covering the cost of PPE to allow students to play in class upon their return to school. In-person students will be getting specialized masks and instrument covers to allow for the safe use of instruments in the bandroom. Unfortunately the timeline is uncertain and students will begin in-person learning with recording studios in the classrooms while we await the PPE.
Jazz Band Update
The new schedule will not allow for 0-hour classes so timing for Jazz Bands will be switching. Not everything is confirmed, but expect Jazz Band rehearsals to be held on Wednesdays (likely Jazz 1 from 11-12 and Jazz 2 from 1-2pm).

Starbucks’ Hot Java Cool Jazz Concert Goes Virtual
Ballard High school's Jazz Band is proud to be part the Virtual Performance for Starbuck’s annual Hot Java, Cool Jazz show, showcasing student talent from local high school jazz bands (and this year, some middle schools too!) Check out Jazz 1’s “When You’re Smiling”. While we cannot gather for a night of truly amazing jazz music at The Paramount, we celebrate these local high schools and middle schools for their dedication and hard work as they continue to hone their skills to become the future of jazz.
Wear your Unity and Community Tee Shirts for Your Concert Recordings!
In order for us to have a uniform look on the videos, please remind your student ot wear their provided tee shirt while filming the video to be submitted for the spring concerts.
For recordings of any of the masterclasses or clinics, clinician videos are located on all the band, jazz, and percussion schoology pages in a folder called “Guest Artist Videos.”

In-Person Learning Schedule Adjustments
The plan for Vocal Jazz moving forward is for Monday afternoon in-person rehearsals and Wednesday morning remote rehearsals.
We just wrapped up the Elliott Bay Solo and Ensemble Contest. Many BHS students participated. We've submitted the entries to adjudication, and students should hear back with feedback and rating soon. Congrats to all participants!
Through the Elliot Bay Music Educators Association, we will be offering district wide workshops to take the place of our usual yearly festivals. They will take place on Wednesday, April 21st and Wednesday, April 27th from 10-11 AM. These will be great presentations, and will also allow our students to interact with other music students from around the district.
April 21 at 10 am-- Ben Hunter (who our students were introduced with this fall), will be offering his presentation on protest music. Attendance optional but encouraged for all music ensembles (contact your teacher if conflicts)
April 27 at 10 am -- Michelle Mcauley is an indigenous music instructor from Reno, a member of four tribes and a competitive dancer. She can give us great perspective from her point of view. And she's a super talented band director. Required for all music ensembles (contact your teacher if a conflict)
We’ve had a number of clinicians in our choir classes lately, and more scheduled for the future. Dr. Angela Kasper was here last week and was excellent. She helped us move towards recording the collaborative video with three other schools that we are producing.
On a date to be determined, Suba Sankaran, a Canadian musician of South Indian descent, will present on South Indian vocal styles and diverse improvisation styles.

Pocketgrass Workshop with Martha Redbone
All BHS orchestras will be collaborating with other orchestras around the region (Cleveland, Rainier Beach, Seattle Pacific University) to perform as a full orchestra for two pieces for Pocketgrass, a virtual variety show. One piece will be a collaborative performance with Martha Redbone, a Native & African-American vocalist/songwriter/composer/educator based in New York. The date of the Pocketgrass episode featuring the BHS orchestras is June (date/time TBD).
In preparation for the Pocketgrass recording, all orchestra students will have a workshop with Martha Redbone at a future date (TBD).
Fiddlers Meet Every Tuesday at 6:30pm: All are Welcome to Join!

Ballard High School’s musical, Spring Awakening, Rocks with Teen Rebellion and Questioning
The nature of all teenagers is to question their parents. Back in 1890’s Germany, things were no different. Spring Awakening follows three teenagers in a small village who experience the dawn of their own sexuality. They inevitably awaken to both joy and pain, with little direction from the adults around them.
The original play from 1891 was so scandalous for addressing sex violence and suicide that it was not staged until 1906. This contemporary production was first staged on Broadway in 2006, with a rock soundtrack by Duncan Sheik.
The cast features 21 BHS students and the play is directed by Shawn M. Riley.
Performance Details
The performances will be live-streamed on May 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, and begin at 7:30 pm.
Tickets
***Parental advisory due to subject matter***
Tickets are $25 and you will be sent a link to watch it on the evening you select.

About Alison’s Coastal Cafe
Owner Alison Soike has been serving the Ballard Community with her passion for food since 2014. Prior to opening her restaurant, Alison was serving the Ballard youth and teen community at the Ballard Boys & Girls Club for 12 years. In her words: “The passion and work with teens didn't stop when I left the Club, we are committed to mentoring youth and teens through our employment platform. Giving teens job skills, life skills and a place to belong outside of school and home gives them a sense of responsibility and ownership over their lives. This last year at the cafe we have been able to pivot in the midst of the pandemic to reach a broader range of the community who were in need of food at home. We are so proud of our community and are committed to supporting programs and small businesses.”
