 Supporting Your Child's Mental Health

Back-to-School Blues

As summer winds down and the school bell rings again, many children face more than just the excitement of a new year. The return to school can also stir up feelings of anxiety, fear, stress, and uncertainty, especially for children who struggle with change, have experienced trauma, or are navigating complex family dynamics. These emotions are normal, but without the right support, they can quickly become overwhelming.

Children may feel pressure to perform well academically or worry about fitting in socially. Others may be dealing with separation anxiety, bullying, or adjusting to a new school environment. For families impacted by mental health challenges, these feelings can be even more intense and difficult to navigate.

As caregivers, it is important to create a safe and open space where children feel comfortable sharing how they are feeling. Daily check-ins, calming routines, and emotional reassurance can make a significant difference. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and beginning the school year with mental wellness in mind helps children feel grounded and supported.

At NCFamU, we believe a strong start begins with strong support. Whether it is offering referrals, emotional encouragement, or helping families connect with school-based mental health services, our team is here to help. This school year, let’s show up for our children with compassion, patience, and the tools they need to thrive both emotionally and academically.

Parent's Resource Corner

As the new school year begins, it's important to ensure our children feel supported not just academically, but emotionally as well. If you're wondering how to help your child manage back-to-school stress or navigate mental health concerns, here are four trusted resources that offer guidance, tips, and tools:

These tools can empower you to advocate for your child, ease their transitions, and build habits that promote resilience all year long.

Spotlight of the Month

Community Care in Action

School Supply Drive

Every child deserves to walk into school with confidence, feeling prepared and supported. This year, our Back-to-School (BTS) Drive has been focused on children whose families are impacted by incarceration, substance use, or the absence of a parent or caregiver. These youth often face emotional and financial barriers that affect their school readiness and overall well-being.

We are proud to share that our efforts have been strengthened by a generous grant awarded to us by The Bernhardt Furniture Company of Caldwell County. Their support has played a key role in helping us gather backpacks, school supplies, and other essentials for distribution. Because of this partnership, we are not only providing tools for learning but also sending a powerful message of care, dignity, and hope to families across our community.

We’re also incredibly thankful for the help of our summer intern, who contributed her time and energy by assisting with supply prep and backpack organization at our office. Her dedication made a meaningful difference in getting everything ready for the children we serve.

Understanding 504 and IEP Plans

Advocating for Your Child's Education

For students who face learning difficulties, mental health challenges, or other conditions that affect their performance in school, having the right academic support is essential. Two key tools that help level the playing field are 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which provide access to accommodations and specialized services.

A 504 Plan can offer adjustments such as extended test time, classroom seating changes, or behavioral support, while an IEP includes more intensive services and tailored educational goals. Both are designed to ensure students with disabilities have the opportunity to succeed alongside their peers.

At NCFamU, we are committed to helping families navigate these processes with confidence. We have staff trained to assist parents and caregivers in understanding their rights, working with schools, and creating plans that meet their child's unique needs.

If you or someone you know needs support with 504 or IEP planning, reach out to us at info@ncfamiliesunited.org and we will connect you with someone who can help guide the way. For more information on these plans you can visit North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
