An Message from the Office of the President:

Dear Little Flower Students and Families –

We are very excited to be putting the final touches on preparations for Little Flower’s safe reopening under our hybrid model. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of how the schedule will work in our opening days as we welcome back our student and staff:

  • Wed, 9/9 – Class of 2021 Seniors Only for Class-Specific business, opening Mass, practice with movement around the building

  • Thurs, 9/10 – Class of 2022 Juniors Only for Class-Specific business, opening Mass, practice with movement around the building

  • Fri, 9/11 – Class of 2023 Sophomores Only for Class-Specific business, opening Mass, practice with movement around the building

  • Mon, 9/14 – Class of 2024 Freshmen Only for Class-Specific business, opening Mass, practice with movement around the building

  • Tues, 9/15 – First schedule run-through as a Maroon Day (Only Students with the “A” Designation on their schedule report)

  • Wed, 9/16 – First schedule run-through as a White Day (Only Students with the “B” Designation on their schedule report)

  • Thurs, 9/17 – First official Maroon Day, (Only Students with the “A” Designation on their schedule report)

  • Fri, 9/18 – First official White Day, (Only Students with the “B” Designation on their schedule report)

Here are a few critical bits of information to keep in mind about how the hybrid model works:

Our students’ schedules were developed as if we were all going to be in the building. There are 8 periods per day (1-8) and there is a 6 day cycle (A-F). Students will only report to Little Flower on the day they are designated to report. If they were assigned to the A Group, they will report on Maroon Days, as indicated on the calendar. If they were assigned to the B Group, they will report on White Days. On the other days they are enjoying their courses in real time virtually, but participating with all their classmates in coursework and activities.

On these opening days described above, students will enter through one of 4 stations in the building to be temperature screened. All students need to complete the COVID screening questions daily found at: Daily Covid Screening Questions

(NOTE: Students failing to complete the screen will be sent home.)

We recommend that everyone follow these basic 4 ‘W’s of our safe return plan:
  • WEAR your mask!
  • WATCH your 6’ distance!
  • WASH your hands!
  • WHERE have you been? (Travel Questionnaire )

Many things will be different but the same quality Little Flower education and experience remains. Especially at this time of so much uncertainty, the most certain thing is the consistency in the way we will ensure your daughter’s safety, security, spiritual fulfillment and her place in our community.
We can’t wait to welcome you back to the 2020-21 School Year!

In gratitude,
Jeane McNamara
A Message from the Office of the Principal:
Seeking Socrates

Principal Colette Weber released details of an academic initiative coming from her office. Hoping to add to the already rigorous academic program, she created a program called Seeking Socrates. The program gives students a college seminar experience after school and on the occasional Saturday morning where topics from different subject areas are examined. Students are encouraged to grow in their ability to ask questions of themselves and others.

Little Flower’s Seeking Socrates program gives students multi-disciplinary experiences in inquiry-based thinking. Drawing upon Socratic method, this program introduces students to cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying assumptions. St. Thomas Aquinas drew on these same ancient ideals to incorporate reason as a way of exploring faith and theology in medieval universities, a system known as Scholasticism in the Catholic academic tradition.

Students are asked to examine connections between what they learn in the classroom and the real world and to examine carefully and thoughtfully what they know and how they know it. The program introduces students to other great minds in human history and from a diverse range of contemporary thinkers. Reading from this wide range of scholars, drawn from a variety of backgrounds, places and ethnicities, students develop multiple lenses through which the world may be understood. In so doing, students develop a broader understanding of how knowledge is created and communicated in human societies. Throughout the program, students will grapple with ethical questions regarding the restriction and expansion of knowledge in all subject areas. The program takes students on a journey in their understanding of their own minds and knowledge. Ultimately, we will examine together the eternal questions, the sacred questions, of human existence through the lenses of science, philosophy and religion.

Introduction to the College Application Process program

Seniors participated in three days of two hour sessions designed to help students develop strong college applications. Kristin Sheridan, our College Guidance Counselor, took students through the steps they will need to take to develop a focused and effective application. Ralph Lelii, having worked with teenagers for over 30 years as an English teacher in other schools, is now volunteering at Little Flower. He focused on introducing the girls to the college essay which is an important part of the application process. His approach was to engage students more fully in the college essay writing exercise so that they see it as a significant expression of themselves and what they hold as important in their lives.

“Teachers Talking with Teachers”

Little Flower teachers engaged with each other through August in virtual sessions called “Teachers Talking with Teachers”. The focus of the sessions was on preparing for excellent instructional with the hybrid model that we are implementing this fall. Mrs Weber hosted these sessions with the belief that teachers are the best resource for each other. Teachers shared strategies that they used in the spring during quarantine which they think will strengthen their teaching this fall. In the most recent session, teachers were asked “What is something positive that comes with having 17 in the classroom rather than 30?” Responses centered around the idea that more individual attention can be given to the group in the classroom on any particular day. It is safer of course to have reduced the number of students in the room but it also means students have more time to participate in discussions or to ask questions they might have been too shy to ask in a bigger group. An unintended consequence of the hybrid model is that the students in school will experience smaller classes more akin to seminars than a typical high school classroom.

A Campus Ministry Update:
Hello Little Flower and welcome to the 2020/2021 school year. We will open the school year with Mass for each of the individual classes Wednesday, September 9 through Monday, September 14. These Masses will follow the social distancing guidelines and will be celebrated in the Auditorium. Additionally the following are the highlights of our Mission and Ministry program this year.

  • Mass, instead of the usual 7:20 am schedule, will be celebrated during lunch periods on a rotating basis. When Mass is not being celebrated at a lunch period we will continue to celebrate our Lunchtime Liturgy Communion Services. Each of these will begin five minutes into the lunch period giving you plenty of time to enjoy your lunch after the liturgy.
  • All are welcome to participate in our Liturgical Friends Club which assists with our liturgies.

  • The Sacrament of Penance will be available Tuesdays through Fridays during a lunch period on a rotating schedule.

  • The Rosary will be prayed on Mondays during a lunch period on a rotating schedule.

  • The newly designed Mission and Ministry component of Campus Ministry will continue to build upon the foundation of the Service Learning program that was set forth last year.
  • All are welcome and encouraged to participate in the various service initiatives of the Community Service Corps (CSC).

  • Another feature of our Mission and Ministry will be enhancements to, understanding of, and a deeper commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our LF community.
  • Your participation and commitment to this component of our Mission and Ministry are most welcome. Further information about this initiative will be provided as the school year unfolds.

I look forward to working with you throughout this new year as we share our love for Little Flower, share our faith and traditions, embrace and acknowledge our unique journeys, and celebrate our experiences of encountering Christ in each other.

My office is located at the center of the Second floor corridor next to our Chapel. I can be reached at [email protected] or at extension 1147.

God bless you and your family most abundantly.
