At the request of the state legislature, ArtsWA launched the Creative Start Arts in Early Learning Program in 2019.
Now entering its third year, the Creative Start program includes grants for early learning communities, community-based professional learning opportunities, and a studio of resources to support students, teachers, and families.
The first Arts Uplift! Conference, a partnership between ArtsWA, OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) , and TAT Lab ( Washington State Teaching Artist Training Lab), offered a hopeful start to another uncertain school year. Over 180 attendees and 11 presenters gathered virtually over the three days to celebrate joyful learning, wellness, and creative possibilities for early learning communities across Washington State. The Arts Uplift! Conference provided early learning educators, teaching artists, and leadership with more tools to integrate arts instruction, culturally responsive teaching methods, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks into their daily work. Participants gained tools for their own creative growth and wellness practices.
Remember to check out ArtsWA’s Creative Start Studio. The studio page provides arts integration resources for early learning educators, teaching artists, families, and caregivers. You can find short video tutorials, mini-lesson plans in English and Spanish, and fun ways to support learning in math and the arts!

There are now more ways for students in Washington State to connect with language and great literature through Poetry Out Loud.
This year, both schools and individual students can engage with learning aligned with NCTE and Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts, as well as Washington State standards in theatre. Poetry Out Loud is a free program and comes with quality resources. Any student in grades 9-12 may participate, either through their school if it registers for the program, or through the new POL Virtual.
“Poetry Out Loud helped me understand poetry so much better.
By reciting, and not just reading the words, the meaning and
emotions of the poem became so much clearer.”
– Kianna Miller, Selah High School, 2019 POL State Finalist
Teachers interested in Poetry Out Loud: we are excited to announce the first Teacher-to-Teacher session for 2021. The session will take place remotely on Tuesday, September 21. Join us to hear from Teacher Liaisons about how Poetry Out Loud helps students.
Teacher-to-Teacher Session #1: Tuesday, September 21 at 3:00 p.m.
