September 30, 2026 — National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is a reminder to us that the work of listening to the truth, accepting it and acting on it is not yet done. In order for reconciliation to happen, settlers — all of us who are not indigenous to Turtle Island/North America — must acknowledge the harm that has been done to the Indigenous peoples of this land. We need to learn from our Indigenous siblings and not erase them.
Acknowledging our use of Indigenous land is not enough. Acknowledging that treaties have not been honoured is necessary, and working to end discrimination and unjust treatment of Indigenous communities is a must. As individuals, we can learn how to be Indigenous allies. We can support collective efforts to ensure clean water and protected land for Indigenous communities.
On Monday, Sept. 14 at 7pm, a group of us will gather to read aloud, Why Are We Here?: A Meditation on Canada by Mary Jo Leddy. Even without the book in hand, you can join us to listen as we read the book and reflect on it together. Meeting ID: 884 1459 7167
Passcode: 956951
Peace, Maria+
P.S. On Wednesday Sept. 16, you have an opportunity to listen, learn, share, pray, and create for a just future for all our children and relations. (See info below.)
