The latest from the Chairman of the Board
It sure looked like spring was going to arrive earlier this year with warmer temperatures, in the upper 70’s. Leaves starting to pop out on the trees and a lot of cruisers were seen on the road. But we know Michigan has a way of showing us, spring today, possible snow tomorrow. Temperatures now are starting to get back to “normal” for this time of year, so we can still look forward to a great spring and good weather to get our cars dusted off and back on the road.

Speaking of getting our cars dusted off. Back To The Bricks® has an all-NEW Event this year called DUST ’EM OFF CAR SHOW sponsored by General Motors and brought to you by Dort Financial Credit Union. The date of this event is Sunday May 23rd, from 9:00 am – 3:00pm. at Dort Financial Center, 3501 Lapeer Rd. You can go to our website and read all about this new event just CLICK HERE for more information.

There are some rumors going around that I would like to get straight, the Dust ’em Off Car Show is a brand new event this year for Back To The Bricks® and it’s FREE to all collector cars. If you want to start your 2021 t-shirt wardrobe you MUST pre-register to get a FREE Collector T-Shirt. By pre-registering you are guaranteed a t-shirt of your size. If you don’t pre-register for the Dust ’em Off Car Show you are still welcome to come to the FREE car show, but you will NOT receive a collector t-shirt. CLICK HERE to register. The register cutoff date is May 10, 2021.

Next rumor, the public is absolutely welcome to the Dust ’em Off Car Show and it’s FREE to the public. You can park anywhere and walk in, but if you want to park at the Dort Financial Center there well be a parking fee of $5.00.

Any other questions about this Dust ’em Off Car Show contact the Dust ’em Off Event Chairman, Al Jones (810-625-27130) [email protected]
or the Back to the Bricks® Executive Director, Amber Taylor (810-877-8383) [email protected]

I was excited to hear an update from our Co-Chairs, Pete Cimbala and Rhonda Rau of the Visionary Promo Tour, which will take place June 4-9, 2021. They have reported to have the largest number of participants this year scheduled to take the tour, far exceeding the previous tours with even more first timers. This is great to see that everyone is ready to get out and take a drive. We will have more details for participants in the coming weeks about packet pick up, and our safety measures we will take to keep everyone safe during this event. For more information on the Promo Tour CLICK HERE.

I am pleased to announce that Shea Automotive Group has partnered with us again this year, to bring back the very popular Road Rally’s. They will return in July and September 2021. Look for information in upcoming newsletters. For last years pictures CLICK HERE.

What's new with our Executive Director
Hey everyone!

April showers bring May flowers!!! But also, EVENTS! We are super excited for the first event of the year, the Chairman of this event, Al Jones and I talk almost daily about it. Next week he and I will be stomping the grounds passing out information cards about the upcoming Dust 'em Off event.

We are still finalizing details on the upcoming Promo Tour. Our Co-Chairs Pete and Rhonda are super fun to work with and they are doing everything they can to ensure a safe and fun tour. As always check the website for more details and updates on the Promo Tour Updates Link. We try to update it every Tuesday for our participants with "What's New". It's a great tool and something we will do nightly during the tour. Post Pictures, interviews and any important information to our participants that they can easily access.

Main Event planning has begun and that means a lot of work on our part. Continuing to honor all our traditions and offer a safe and fun family atmosphere is key, and even more important this year.

I have more details for anyone interested in partnering with us this year, for our 17th year of Back to the Bricks®. Magazine Ads, Vendors, Sponsors and Partners welcomed! It's all about community and we are doing our best to make this happen.

Well, that's all for now. Have a GREAT day, week and Month everyone!

It looks like spring has finally arrived and I am starting to see collector cars out on the roads. Like myself, I feel we all are ready to get out of the house and start getting the cars ready for the road. I had an interesting question asked of me the other day as to how I felt about the younger generation’s interest in the car hobby and are we starting to see our hobby fading slowly away.

Obviously, this has played on my mind for the past couple of weeks and caused me to think about how I will attempt to answer my friend’s question. First, I want to qualify my response that what I am about to write is my opinion only. You may choose to agree or disagree and that is okay with me. So here I go.

First, the price of collector cars has gone up exponentially over the years. Take the cost of a Model A Ford as an example. Just in the past ten years or so, you could have purchased a fully restored Model A for $6,500 to $8,000 all day long. That same car depending on the degree of restoration is now bumping $30K; not all of them but some of them. The same for a Volkswagen Beetle as it is not uncommon to see the same thing happening with the prices of the ‘Bugs’. And when it comes to the muscle cars of the ‘60’s and you are new to the hobby, you’d better have deep pockets!

Secondly, the older cars are not loaded up with all the technical features of the newer cars of today. Furthermore, a stock turbo charged V-6 powered SUV will most likely leave a ’69 Z28 Camaro standing at the traffic light! You might say ‘#*+#*%’! Ouch!  That hurts! Unfortunately, this is the truth and is a blow to one’s ego.

Third. Resto mods are the ‘in thing’ now as the recent Scottsdale auctions have proven this point. As I watched the ‘Barrett Jackson’ auction last month, I thought I was watching the Mustang, Camaro and Corvette auction show! And the prices for these high-end resto mods; through the roof! And I ask, what young potential hobbyists can afford these types of cars. Not many unless you are lucky enough to win the lottery.

The high-tech world has taken over the interest of many of the younger generation. If the gadget in the grip of their hands does not have a gazillion buttons to push, and half-a-dozen toggle switches to push and pull on, interest fades fast. But guess what, my old ’36 Auburn six-cylinder sedan does not have any of that stuff unless you call the gas, light switch, spark advance pull knobs high tech. Top speed might be 75 MPH which frankly is fast enough I can still kill myself in it (the same goes for the Model A Ford cars).

The hobby is changing and there is no doubt about that. Look at the number of auto related magazines that have gone out of publication. The number of car cruises and car shows are down across the nation and the beat goes on. I would like to leave each of you with this question? Our government and the auto manufactures are pushing alternative fuel vehicles unto the market, principally electric cars and trucks. The question is will there be a Daytona 500, Indy 500, or NHRA National Drag races in our future? How about drag boat races? Motocross races? Or for that matter, any type of performance-based vehicle races? Only the future knows, or maybe one of you.

In the meantime, get your current collector cars out and enjoy them and do not forget to register for the ‘Back to the Bricks’ first annual ‘Dust Off’ car show coming up in May and make sure to register for the upcoming June ‘Back to the Bricks’ Prom Tour by the first of May.

Keep on rollin’
