November 2023 Newsletter

Latest from the Chairman of the Board

Hello Back to the Bricks® Friends,

November is a month of gratitude and praise. I hope everyone has some plans to cherish and embrace the family and friends that surround you this thanksgiving. It is one of my favorite holidays. There is always wonderful food and time to see family and friends.

It is also a time to celebrate in the Jones house, as it’s Deb and I’s wedding anniversary. I know what you are thinking… and you are right, my wife Deb is so BLESSED to have me. Lol, lol. Just kidding, of course, but I am very thankful for my Wife, my 3 kids, my 7 grandkids, and my 1 great granddaughter!

I’m also thankful for our Back to the Bricks® family. I know, as an organization, we have been blessed with so many wonderful volunteers and people we have met at all the car events and gatherings. I’m also thankful for so many wonderful sponsors and vendors that we interact with at our events.

It’s also time to express my sincere thanks for the leadership team we have within our Board of Directors. They are visionary and inspire me whenever we meet, come up with ideas and ways to continue shifting higher and moving this vehicle down the road.

So, take a few minutes this thanksgiving week and list what you are thankful for. Share it with your family and friends, make sure they know. And one more thing, I’m thankful to be an American!

God bless you this Thanksgiving!

Thank you,

Al Jones

Chairman of the Board

News from the Executive Director

We've been working hard on the upcoming year. There's a lot to plan, especially when we are celebrating the 20th Year of Back to the Bricks®.

So many ideas, so many opportunities to gather and celebrate, pay honor and tribute to the founders that got us to where we are today.

I’m happy to announce that we’ve recently released the 20th anniversary commemorative logo and it’s truly beautiful. Special thank you to Gary Alumbaugh, one of our long-time volunteers, committee members and artist extraordinaire.

Thanksgiving is a great time to be thankful and of course I am. Recently Peyton and I have been collecting cans to help pay for her trip to Washington DC, an educational trip with her school to learn, see and explore. She’s very interested in History and is looking forward to going. With all the cans and donations, we’ve hit our goal, and her trip is paid for in full. Such a nice relief going into the holidays. So, thank you to all that gathered, collected, and shared with us. We appreciate you more than you know.

I’m working with the Genesee County Sheriff’s department on their upcoming “Christmas Spectacular” event, December 9th, 2023. Every dollar raised goes right back into the community. Please consider a donation to help make this event bigger and better than before.

Not only are we we’re working hard on 1st show of the year, Chrome & Ice™, and also the Back to the Bricks Promo Tour that will take place June 7th – 12th, 2024. We’re hoping to release all the information on this year’s tour on December 14th. More details to come.

If you are looking to get more involved this upcoming year, don’t forget to sign up to be a volunteer. We can’t do this without our amazing volunteers. SIGN UP here! And PLEASE come see us at the Holiday Market.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Billy Durant’s Birthday Party!

By: Gary Fisher

President - Genesee County Historical Society

William C. “Billy” Durant is a name known to auto history mavens, but still not nearly as well-known as it should be around both in Flint and the state of Michigan but across the United States as well.

Strangely, his life and legacy are typically presented incorrectly. This is sadly true even in Flint where wild misstatements about Durant appear in the institutions of local institutions (including those that would not even exist without Durant) and have been almost universally ignored by the education community over the years.

There have been some big improvements in recent years including recognition by the Sloan Museum, a statue by Factory One, and of course the beautiful Joe Rundell statue sponsored by Back To The Bricks.

The Genesee County Historical Society has been working to build on those terrific success stories to promote his legacy, and the implications and opportunities that knowledge presents for our current times. That’s the beauty of the Durant story. It’s not just about history and the past, but rather what we can learn from that history that can make the present and the future better places to live, work and thrive.

To that end, we invite you to join us for our second annual celebration of Billy Durant’s life and legacy at our combination Christmas and Holiday Party and Billy’s birthday party. Last year’s event was an enormous success and we had to turn so many folks away we’re moving it to a larger location this year.

Please join us for storytelling, terrific food and camaraderie, and a celebration of our own community’s tremendous legacy. For more information and to secure your ticket to GeneseeHistory.org!
