Quarterly Newsletter | February 2021
FAST FACTS:

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Backpack Bulletin — the quarterly newsletter from the Frederick Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack! This email will keep YOU in touch with the impactful work we're doing in the Frederick community to feed kids who might otherwise go hungry.

This school year, the Frederick Chapter has provided over 38,000 hunger-free weekends for local kids, but we can do more. Let's keep growing and continue to prevent childhood hunger in our community!
NATIONAL CHAPTER + A NEW WEBSITE:

We are taking the fight against weekend hunger to the next level for kids in Frederick County by transitioning to a national chapter! Angela Abrishami, a longtime volunteer, is our new program director, leading events and coming up with various solutions to feed children. "I am very excited to help children that need us most," said Angela.

One of the perks of becoming a national chapter? A new website! Click here to check it out. While you're there, go to the "Get Involved" page to learn how you can volunteer to feed kids in Frederick.

Core News:
At Blessings in a Backpack, we ensure that kids nationwide have full bellies over the weekend by sending them home on Fridays with backpacks full of satisfying and nutritional food. In addition to the pre-packed food we're providing due to COVID-19, we have started occasionally distributing what we call Emergency Snack Packs (ESP) to supplement more filling items on long weekends, school breaks, or during inclement weather.

Who packs the ESPs? Volunteers!
We get the food ready at our local office for volunteers to pick up, take home to fill, and return to our office. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who miss packing, want to serve in some way while staying safe at home, or need to keep kids busy while at home.

One volunteer shared, "I just couldn't sit around anymore not feeding these kids. Sign me up!"

Interested in packing ESP for kids in Frederick? Click here for the details — like ordering items from our Amazon wish list and where to drop off the bags of food. We are grateful for your thoughtfulness and willingness to help!
Good Apples:
Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer Anderson
Jen is the food distribution team lead and coordinator at Monocacy Valley Montessori and North Frederick Elementary School.

Like many volunteers, she has not stopped volunteering at her schools to provide food for kids. In September, she jumped in as our chapter's distribution team lead — coordinating food distribution to 28 sites! With a positive attitude and giving heart, Jen is ensuring Frederick County's children do not go hungry on the weekends.

"I am very honored to be a part of this wonderful program! I look forward to helping to feed the students that benefit from this program in Frederick County,” said Jen.
Volunteer Spotlight: St. John Regional Catholic School Students
Thank you from the bottom of our backpacks to the students at St. John Regional Catholic School! The kids collected and delivered 4,235 individually-wrapped food items our local chapter.

This extra food will help us make ESPs to supplement the weekend food bags already distributed by Blessings in a Backpack. If you're interested in getting involved or volunteering to pack ESPs, click here to learn more!
