• We surpassed our goal!!!
Many thanks go to all who donated backpacks for students in need at Centreville High School. Our goal was to provide 25 backpacks and we collected 27! Thanks Denise McCarthy for delivering them ! These backpacks are sturdy and will last more than one year. (Students do not get a new backpack every year.) Many thanks for your generosity!

  • Afghan Orders

Several people have inquired about putting in an order for one of St. John's Centreville Afghans, which was produced and sold here a few years ago. If you would like to add your name to the list, we will collect the names and see if we have enough interest to put in an order. The list is in the Breezeway. (We need to order 12.) You may also email the office: The price is about $50.
  • Nursery help needed!
Our nursery supervisor, Gluay Zimmerman, will be away on August 5, 12 and 19. Lindsay Jones has volunteered to staff the nursery on August 5 and 12. We still need someone for August 19. Can you help? Please tell Carol as soon as possible.

  • Vestry
Wonder what the Vestry does and what goes on in Vestry meetings? Feel free to sit in on one! The Vestry meets on the third Sunday of each month at noon in the library. (The next meeting is Sunday, August 18). All but three members of our Vestry will be rotating off in February, having completed their 3 year terms and they cannot be re-elected for at least one year. So we will need up to 9 volunteers to fill the seats on the Vestry. Don't assume "someone else will do it" or "I have nothing to offer". Everyone has gifts and talents that can be used and we need YOUR help. Talk to a current Vestry member and/or sit in on a meeting. Then decide what you can do.

  • Israel Presentation by Walt Cooner
On Sunday, August 26, Walt Cooner, a specialist on the Middle East, will make a presentation on Israel - past, present and future. Why is there so much conflict in that part of the world? Is there any hope for a peaceful settlement? What is the current culture like? How do the different groups treat each other? For those going to Israel in January, what might we encounter when we get there? All are invited to come on Sunday, August 26 at 10:50 AM - 12:30/1:00 PM in the library . Note that this presentation will take the place of the lectionary class for this week only. (This is a change in date and time from what was originally discussed.)

Carol will be away on vacation from Monday, August 6 to Saturday, August 18. The Rev. Samuel Reddimalla will take the service on August 12. Val Tucker will lead Evening Prayer on Wednesday, August 8 and 15.

We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead for the Sunday Service lessons.

The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

August 12, 2018
9:30 AM

David weeps for Absalom_Chagall, Marc

 The First Reading: 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33
King David's son, Absalom, rises up against him, to steal the kingdom from his father. In battle, Absalom's forces are defeated, and though David had asked his army to be kind to his son, Absalom is killed in battle. David mourns bitterly.

The Psalm: 130
The Epistle: Ephesians 4:25-5:2
Eschewing lying, stealing, and weasley ways, followers of Jesus are called to act in truth, kindness, and love. Rather than watered down, let our behavior be bold and fierce.

The Gospel: John 6:35, 41-51
It is not the witnessing of miracles or the winning of arguments that brings a person to faith in God, it is softness of heart and readiness to hear God's word. May we pray to be so moved by the Holy Spirit that we would be transformed by God made known in Jesus Christ.

Walt Cooner
Barbara Tourtelot
Andrew Wade
Every Wednesday evening, we have a service of Holy Eucharist and healing at 6:00 PM. The service is about 30 minutes. It is a perfect alternative for those who cannot come to church on Sunday mornings, as well as a good spiritual boost in the middle of the week. Come join us!

In those moments when God’s glory shines in the face of another, we see them as they truly are and always have been, with unveiled faces, the beloved of God being changed from one degree of glory to another. And the same is true for us. For the transfiguration is not an idea. It is not a story. It is not a fable. It is a lived reality.
