On Friday, March 31, 2023, the Herb Kohl Education Foundation announced Kit Fleck, Badger High School Senior, as a 2023 Herb Kohl Student Initiative Scholarship recipient. Kit was chosen to receive a $10,000 award for showing a high level of motivation to achieve and a strong promise to succeed in college and beyond. Kit will be attending Carthage College to study Psychology.
Kit was one of 190 graduating high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence and displayed a broad range of activity and leadership in their community.
Award recipients were selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and the Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association.
The Kohl Foundation award program was established by Herb Kohl, former U.S. Senator, philanthropist, and businessman. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded nearly $34 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools.

May is an extremely busy time of the school year for our Badger Community. All of it is good news: Organization and Sports Banquets, Underclass Awards, Senior Awards and Scholarships, Advanced Placement Exams, Concerts, and so much more! During this busy time, I hope we all get a chance to pause and look around at the year in review. AND, to see through all the hustle and bustle to the joy and excitement that comes with the end of a school year. For our seniors, this is the beginning of the “lasts of the lasts” and a time to savor years well spent in our school buildings.
This time of the year can also come with some stressors. To assist with working through this time without getting overwhelmed, I’ve asked our Hope Squad for some advice on how families can help their high school students manage end of the school year stress that can come from studying for final exams, saying goodbye to friends, and so many other sources.
Hope Squad Advice to parents/guardians:
- Be their cheerleader. Support and encourage your student in their schoolwork. Show genuine interest in what they’re learning. Always offer an encouraging word.
- Create a schedule. Having a set schedule or routine could take some stress off your student and help them better manage their time. Come up with a schedule together that includes a balance of study time, downtime (such as participating in activities they enjoy, socializing with friends, etc.), and family time. The key here is not to overschedule.
- Ask questions that align with your family’s definition of success. If you only ask your student what grade they got on a test or in a class, they will believe that grades matter most. If that isn’t your family's definition of success, try asking questions such as, “What did you learn today?”, “What did you do with your friends?” or “How do you feel about your day? Why?”
-
Show unconditional support and love. Through your actions and your words, let your student know that they are loved no matter what. Though stress in school is normal, especially as the school year wraps up, take action if you suspect your student may be overstressed or if their stress is causing depression or other mental health illnesses. Hope Squad: Wellness Today
This is an exciting time in the arc of a school year or high school years for our seniors. Please take that moment to savor these memories in the making.

Badger Library Book Club reads a book every quarter and celebrates the ending by getting together to discuss the book. Our discussions are rich conversations about the books we read and always involve some sort of food, show, movie, coffee shop, or author visits. Recently, Badger Library Book Club read a book set right here in Lake Geneva. The book, Mailboat - The End of the Pier, is the first book in the Mailboat Suspense Series written by Danielle Lincoln Hanna. Our club enjoyed the local aspects of the book and had the opportunity to meet the author. Danielle Lincoln Hanna visited our meeting to discuss her Lake Geneva research, characters, and writing process for the book. Book Club is open to all students and staff of Badger High School and is flexible to meet the schedules of busy teenagers. (Some book club members are not present due to other sport/club obligations.)
