Two Badger Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Semi Finalists
Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSCR) announced the names of two Badger High School Seniors who have qualified among approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 67th National Merit Scholarship Program. Nolan Cassidy and Thomas Whowell are among the academically talented high school seniors with an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring.

What a great start to the school year! Our freshmen are comfortable with their schedules and are getting involved in clubs, sports, and other activities. Our theater is rocking with rehearsals for the One Act Play and the November musical, Newsies. Let’s keep the energy going well into the fall - please continue to attend events at Badger to support our Badger community.
Speaking of keeping the energy going…. We have all heard the saying “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. And nowhere is it more important than in the learning process. Research in the Principal Leadership journal indicates that students who skip breakfast “make more errors and have slower memory recall” than teens who eat a healthy breakfast. Students cannot focus on the intensity of learning when they are hungry. Badger offers a variety of breakfast selections for our students including a “grab and go” breakfast for students who need to finish eating as they head off to class and a “second chance” breakfast between periods 1 and 2. Please have the discussion at home about the importance for the brain of starting off the day with a healthy breakfast. A reminder this school year breakfast is free to all students (and lunch).
October is a month of much student activity. With teens on the roadways heading home from school activities at various times, please take a moment to discuss safe driving with your teen. Consider this: 4.6 seconds is the time texting takes your eyes off the road. At 55 MPH this is like driving the length of a football field blindfolded. A good tip before starting your car is to set the automatic response on your phone to let people know you are driving and will get back to them once you stop. For more information on distracted driving check out this link on distracted driving - but not while you are driving.
Badger is very proud of all the course offerings available to students that help drive their future. Currently, the fastest growing segments of the national job market are wind turbine service technicians, anything in the medical field (including an increase in the need for nurse practitioners), and cyber security assistants. Badger High School offers course work that teaches the soft skills that will be required of every career listed AND through programs such as AP and the Academies of Badger, students obtain the academic knowledge required as well.
Badger strives to maintain a safe learning environment with students who are respectful, responsible, and prepared learners. With that in mind, I have one cautionary tale as we head into the month of October: TikTok and the “Devious Licks” challenge. The “challenge” motivates students to either damage school property or steal items from school and then post the footage onto the TikTok social media platform. This vandalism, destruction of property and theft is obviously not tolerated at Badger. I’ve spoken with students about their responsibility as a consumer of social media to watch out for platforms like this attempting to manipulate them. Please have the conversation with your student about this trend and reinforce that this is not the kind of behavior they should engage in or support.
There is so much good happening at Badger High School and I thank our students who are engaging in behaviors that make us all proud and contribute to a fun and successful year.

PSAT
Badger High School is administering the PSAT test to 80 junior or sophomore students who would like to take it on Wednesday, October 13th from 7:45 – 12:00 at Badger. The PSAT is a great way to get ready for college as it measures reading, writing, language and math skills in a format similar to the ACT and SAT test. This test also provides the opportunity for students to compete for recognition and scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
To sign up for the test, students need to bring in a $18.00 check made payable to Badger High School and give it to Ms. Ingersoll in the Counseling Center.
The deadline to register for the PSAT test is this Friday, October 8th. We are unable to take any late registrations so make sure to have students turn in their check right away so they do not miss this opportunity.
If you have any questions, please contact the Counseling Center!
WEF College Fair
The Wisconsin Education Fair (WEF) will be taking place on October 7th at Delavan-Darien High School. We will be leaving Badger at 8:30 and returning at 10:15. There will be 100+ colleges to gain information about during this time! To sign up and get a field trip permission slip, please stop into the counseling office.
College Representatives
Watch for information in your email and the announcements on when college representatives will be at Badger to meet with students. In person meetings are back for this year and many schools will be scheduling visits with us throughout the fall. The library also has virtual reality tours for many out of state schools!
Transcripts
Students needing to send transcripts anywhere need to use www.parchment.com. The account is free to set up and 2 copies can be sent for free. They are $7.15 each for each additional copy. If a paper copy is needed for any reason, please contact Mrs. Ingersoll in the counseling office.
ACT scores
Colleges that request ACT scores can be sent through www.act.org. If an account is not already set up, students will need to create an account to send scores. Many colleges will not accept paper copies or emailed copies. They will need to be sent directly from ACT.
Worker's Permits
If you are in need of a Worker's Permit, you'll need to bring the following to Mrs. Ingersoll in the Counseling Center: Social Security Card, $10 Cash and a letter from the employer stating that you will be working. If Mrs. Ingersoll is not available, you can get a worker's permit from City Hall in Lake Geneva.
