CHANGES IN ACT TESTING
In order to give our students the best possible testing environment for the ACT, we will be making a few positive changes this spring. The ACT will be held on March 7th, 2023, and will be administered electronically using chromebooks. This will be a day for Juniors only; Freshman, Sophomores and Seniors will have no school on this day.
How will this help your student? There will be no distractions of bells or students in the hallway for passing periods. We will be able to spread our Juniors across more rooms, resulting in a more comfortable testing environment, and reducing testing anxiety. Additionally, all of our teachers will be engaged in an ACT role, allowing for multiple proctors per testing room. This practice helps ensure our testing integrity.
What has not changed? All Juniors are still required by the state to take the ACT.
We will also be using this same format for the PreACT Secure test taken by the Freshman and Sophomore students. This is the former ACT Aspire test. The PreACT Secure will be held on April 18th, 2023. Juniors and Senior students will have no school on this day.

The Badger staff and administration wish you and your family a very healthy and happy 2023. As we ring in the new year, our students are beginning to prepare for Semester I Exams. Here are the times and periods of testing each day of exams:
- Wednesday, January 18. Periods 1,3,5 will test. School is dismissed at 1:24pm. Students are welcomed to stay later to study in the library or touch base with their teachers, but the buses will leave shortly after the 1:24pm dismissal. Lunch will be provided.
- Thursday, January 19 Periods 2,4,6 will test. School dismissal is at 1:24pm, same as Wednesday.Students are welcomed to stay later to study in the library or touch base with their teachers, but the buses will leave shortly after the 1:24pm dismissal. Lunch will be provided.
- Friday, January 20. Periods 7 and 8 will test. School dismissal is 11:06am. Lunch is NOT provided on this day.
Course selection for the 2023-2024 school year begins on February 3 and runs through February 10, 2023. You can find the course guide online at Career Planning and Course Guide. Your student will meet for two 40 minute time periods to select their course with the assistance of our teachers. These flex periods will be on Monday, February 6 and Thursday, February 9. Please have a conversation with your student about their interests and course offerings they can choose to support them.
Badgers are very proud of the amount of academic opportunities our students have. As you look through the Course Guide, please watch for classes that are Transcripted through a Technical College or the University of Wisconsin Green Bay or are Advanced Placement classes. Badger saved our families over $500,000 last year in college credits. Transcripted classes are found from Automotives to World Language. This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to graduate with a transcript from Badger High School AND a Technical College or UWGB transcript as well.
I am putting this reminder from December in this Newsletter as well since January is definitely the month where winter driving skills need to kick into high gear.
AAA safe driving tips:
- Keep a bundle of cold-weather gear in your car, such as extra food and water, warm clothing, a flashlight, a glass scraper, blankets, medications, and more.
- Make certain your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread.
- Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times.
- Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow. (Winter Driving Tips)
Hope you and your family have a wonderful January.

FAFSA
For the college bound student, this is a reminder to fill out the FAFSA form if you have not done so yet. FAFSA stands for the Free Application For Federal Student Aid. Any student looking to obtain federally funded grants and loans must complete the FAFSA in order to determine eligibility. Some students feel they will not be eligible for these types of aid and choose not to complete the form; however, keep in mind this form is sometimes a requirement in order to obtain additional scholarships and work study opportunities.
ACT
Juniors will take the ACT test on March 7th. To practice and prepare for the test, go to www.act.org or check our library for practice test books to check out. This will count as an official score so it is important to take it seriously and do your best.
CLASS REGISTRATION
The online course selection will be done through PowerSchool and it will be available between February 3rd and February 10th. After the online course selection window closes, any changes will need to be done by meeting with a counselor. The course guide will be available online on the Badger website and we encourage both parents and students to utilize this resource. Information will begin to come out through the month of January as to how students will go online and select courses.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Graduating seniors should continue to apply for the many scholarship opportunities available on the Badger website. Several emails were sent to the senior class with information on how to access scholarships. The General Scholarship Application is due on January 6th and can be found on the Badger website. There are many scholarships that have due dates later this spring as well. Please be aware of the criteria when applying, what the specific due date is and where to send the completed application. Good luck!
WORK PERMIT
If a work permit is needed, please see Mrs. Ingersoll in the counseling center. You will need $10 cash, your social security card, and a letter from the employer stating that you will be working there. If Mrs. Ingersoll is not available, you can get a work permit from city hall.

Badger Library offers eBooks, audioBooks, and eMagazines to students and staff. Badger High School is part of the Wisconsin Digital Library Consortium who provides a diverse collection of electronic materials for many schools. The Overdrive platform SORA is familiar to many students as it is the same platform many public and school libraries use. SORA is available on student chromebooks, as well as in Apple and Google Play Stores. For more directions and video tutorials, visit the Badger Library Books webpage. | |
