April 2024 Referendums
On the April 2 ballot, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District and the Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union (Badger) High School District will each ask the voters to approve exceeding the revenue limit by $3,000,000 beginning with the 2024-2025 school year for recurring purposes consisting of ongoing operational and maintenance expenses, infrastructure, technology and safety upgrades, and educational programming.
Why Referendum?
Our Districts face financial challenges that require the attention of our entire community. This is due to several factors:
- Outdated Funding System
- Inadequate State Funding
- Growing Student Needs
- Rising Operational Costs
What will Operational Referendums allow the districts to do?
- Support for teaching and learning to increase student growth and achievement and offer competitive academic courses, programs, and services for all students.
- Attract and retain the best educators by providing competitive salaries and benefits.
- Address annual, ongoing maintenance on our aging buildings.
- Cover rising inflationary costs on goods and services, including transportation, utilities, curriculum, supplies, and equipment.
What have the districts done to be fiscally responsible?
What is the estimated tax impact?

(2) Teacher of the Year - Lake Geneva - Genoa City Union (Badger) High School District
(3) Specials Services Teacher of the Year - Special Services Teachers are those who serve in a capacity other than that of a classroom teacher. Special services roles can include but are not limited to special education, interventionist, speech-language pathologist, school counselor, school psychologist, school nurse, school social worker, etc.
(4) Support Staff of the Year - Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Congratulations to all our participants in Badger winter sports and activities! Badgers brought home State titles in Ski Race and Wrestling (as of this writing). You have much to be proud of. I do hope you’ve been able to attend our sporting events, concerts, and our winter play over the course of the last month.
The Junior Class will take the ACT on March 12th. This day, only Juniors will be attending. If your student is planning on going to a technical college, 4 year university, 2 year university, the military, or into the world of work, the score they earn on the ACT can have a positive impact. For example, if your student scores a 16 or higher on the test, Gateway Technical College waives the entrance placement tests. For those attending a 2 or 4 year university, the score can lead to scholarships and Universities are rebounding from the COVID years and are using the ACT as part of acceptance determination. For those headed into the world of work, the ACT score can be used to offset future training needs.
Badger English, science, social studies, and math departments ran practice ACT tests during the month of February and used class time to practice with ACT questions and test taking strategies. Please be sure your student gets a good night sleep on March 11th as part of their preparation for the test.
Our students will be busy this month with Music Concerts, Sports Banquets, and preparing for the end of the 3rd Quarter on April 5th.
Remember that the Spring Parent/Teacher Conference night is March 6th, 4pm -7pm in our Sports Center. We have invited Walworth County to set up a “Hidden In Plain Sight” room, right next to the Sports Center entrance, for families to walk through and see approximately 30 “red flags” that are signs of substance use. This provides an opportunity to educate our community and possibly open dialogue between students and their families about this issue.
Wishing you and your family a healthy and fun start to Spring.
Warm Regards,
Jenny Straus
