Bais Yaakov e-Newsletter Lower Elementary Parshas Titzaveh

FIRST GRADE SIDDUR PLAY In First Grade , the girls learn the " Fundamentals of Kriah " over the first six months of school. On Sunday, February 23, after all their hard work - they received their Siddurim in front of over 600 family members and friends, as well as an additional 390 people who joined us through a live video hookup courtesy of Mr. Tzvi Wygoda . This is followed by ongoing instruction in the different parts of the Siddur as well as an exciting program to encourage girls to practice their skills by reading all of Sefer Tehillim .    The Bais Yaakov Siddur Play is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Marcel Reischer in memory of his mother, Mrs. Eva Reischer, Chava bas Yitzchak Mendel A"H . She was a woman who treasured Tefilah and valued the role her siddur played in her life. May her Neshama be uplifted through the Kiddush Hashem of the Siddur Play as well as all the Tefillos which are expressed daily by our entire student body using their siddurim . This year we invited all grandparents to send in a personal note on a beautifully designed label that will be inserted in their granddaughter's siddur .

MRS. BRECHERS'S SECOND GRADE PURIM PLAY IN HEBREW Second Grade students were fantastic in their play this week. Please enjoy this video as it demonstrates how much our children can accomplish with persistence and guidance! Special Kudos to Morah Rivky Brecher for putting it all together and giving your daughters confidence in themselves. They were able to feel a sense of pride in their own capabilities. It is an example of the care and concern Mrs. Brecher gives to help build each child's sense of self. The girls are learning that hours of effort make a difference. Moreover, they learned about Purim and were able to express themselves in Lashon HaKodesh .

ZOOMOBILE VISITS THE SCHOOL The Second Grade classes have been learning about animals and their habitats in a science unit developing the innate curiosity which children have for animals. In addition, we have a tradition of almost twenty years and counting to welcome the Baltimore ZooMobile to Bais Yaakov. This project is the brainchild of former Bais Yaakov second grade teacher, Mrs. Janet Feldman . This program promotes awareness of the different climates various animals need to survive. This year we had the opportunity to see and learn about a penguin, boxed turtle, bearded dragon and hedgehog tenrec to offer our children greater exposure to the natural world around them. Our Second Grade students completed an animal project to describe their animal and create a 3D diorama which features their particular animal and habitat which it lives in. The school halls have been filled with wonderful animal projects created by the second grade classes. Our girls have created over 140 dioramas, depicting real life environments of different animals and their habitats!

Q IS FOR QUILT As the Nursery Students learn the ABC's, they discovered that there are some very interesting words that start with Q.   Morah Tamar Kaplowitz's  class took the word quilt and learned all about its components – batting, stitching, backing and edging. The girls each received a square to draw something for each letter of the ABC's. Then Morah Marcia Bitman , one of our Nursery Support team, who teaches the girls phonemic awareness and is a master artist of needlework and quilting, took their creations and made a real QUILT. It is stunning and will now be added to the house play area to enjoy all year.

NURSERY NUMBER RODS Here is some more Nursery A Nachas !! These are the "Number Rods"! They are a fabulous beginning to understanding math. You can see the red and blue markings that delineate the units that make up each number. The patterns help the girls to see the relationship between the numbers, such as that two is twice as big as one, or that five is bigger than three.

NURSING HOME VISITS Our N ursery and Kindergarten Classes visited Tudor Heights and Levindale nursing homes to bring Purim simcha to the residents in each center. Morah Esti Greenstein accompanied their programs on site. Their adorable songs and cards, not to mention their gorgeous smiles, were just what everyone needed to get ready for the festivities next week.

PURIM SPIRIT IN PRESCHOOL This week, Mrs. Ruchama Landa shared a special dose of Purim Simcha with our students through the medium of dance. She helped the students learn a new dance giving every child an opportunity to feel good about herself, at the same time filling our school with anticipation for the upcoming Purim .

MOBILE MISHKAN COMES TO BY Erev Shabbos Parshas Terumah , the preschool and elementary, had a unique opportunity to see a 3-D model of the Mishkan . This was built out of colored plastic by Rabbi Hallel Newman using a 3-D printer. He presented the Mishkan assembled and then demonstrated how it was taken apart and rebuilt. It was an informative day for all our Talmidos to gain a clearer idea of what the Mishkan looked like. A special word of gratitude to our PTA for sponsoring this educational activity.

100TH DAY OF SCHOOL 97...98...99...100! Hooray for the 100th Day of School - February 18! The Preschool celebrated this milestone in grand style using all of our senses to mark the occasion. We learned how to count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. The Kindergarten classes met in the auditorium to watch " Mrs. Bindergarten's 100th Day of Kindergarten " and assemble 10 sets of 10 different edibles to munch on during the story. In addition, each student was crowned with the number 100. In Grades 1 and 2 , we had girls from the Upper Elementary enter the classrooms and conduct numerous math activities with the younger students. This interaction was a productive collaboration and facilitated a positive social lesson for one and all. Marking the 100th Day of school is much more than a counting activity - it's a celebration of all that we have learned thus far and a reminder that the school year is more than half over! Consequently, everyone in the building is happy to reach this major milestone in the school year!
