Important Safety Steps if You Find a Bat in Your Home

Dear Community Members,

We are reminding residents that if you find a bat in your home, do not let it outside. If there is any chance of human or pet exposure, the bat should be safely captured and saved for rabies testing. Because bat bites can be very small and easily go unnoticed, New York State guidance considers an exposure to be any scenario where a bite cannot be ruled out—including finding a bat in the same room as a sleeping person, an unattended child, or someone who is incapacitated.

If you find a bat in your home, do not let it outside if there is any chance of exposure.

Why Testing is Important

If the bat is safely captured, ECHD can send it out to be tested for rabies. A negative test result can prevent individuals from needing rabies post-exposure treatment. If the bat escapes, is let outside, or tests positive, a multi-dose treatment series is recommended for anyone who may have been exposed.

If you find a bat (dead or alive):

  • If/when it is safe to do so, confine it to the room where it was discovered and wait for it to land.
  •  Wearing thick gloves, cover the bat with a small container, such as a coffee can or piece of Tupperware.
  •  Slide a lid or a piece of cardboard under the container and secure with tape to prevent escape.
  • Call ECHD immediately 518-873-3500 for further instructions, even if the bat escapes or cannot be located.

This Month in Health

Yes, protection from childhood vaccines can fade over time. Adults also become eligible for targeted protection against viruses like shingles or pneumococcal disease as they age.

Key questions:

Can I get multiple vaccines at the exact same time? Yes, getting several vaccines during a single visit is safe and highly effective. It triggers a normal immune response without overloading your system.

What if I lost my personal immunization records? You can start tracking your history by using an official record from your physician or local pharmacy. If documentation is missing, providers can often run blood titers to check immunity or safely repeat certain vaccines.

Have more questions? Call one of our nurses and stay tuned for our shot talk posts coming up in October where our nurses communicate vaccines! You can also visit our immunization page.

Second Annual Community Baby Shower: Connects Families with Support and Resources

We celebrated local families at our second annual Community Baby Shower on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Edgemont Barns in Port Henry. The "Locally Grown" themed event was designed to support expecting parents, caregivers, and families with infants under one year old by bringing essential health education, local vendor resources, and community networks together under one roof.

The event, timed to align with National Breastfeeding Month, highlighted the wide array of maternal and child health resources available across Essex County while offering attendees a welcoming space to celebrate new beginnings.

"Looking out across the room, my heart was just full," said Linda Beers, Public Health Director for the Essex County Health Department (ECHD). "Whether someone is expecting their very first baby, navigating life with a newborn, or supporting a growing family, this celebration was for them. The event brought our community together to ensure families know they never have to navigate early parenthood alone."

ORV (oral rabies vaccine). Map of areas for bait drops.

What is the Health Department's Role in the Bait Drops?

While ECHD shares our local rabies data with USDA and makes recommendations for locations with the most need for rabies prevention, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) ultimately decides the geographical areas to receive the ONRAB bait. (ONRAB is a specific brand of oral rabies vaccine.)

From approximately August 5-12, 2026 ONRAB baits will be distributed across the Champlain Valley in northeastern New York, northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire by fixed wing aircraft.
