APRIL 23, 2020
Dear Baker Families,

As we end our 5th week of learning, I could not be more excited to see the ways that Baker student leadership is thriving in this virtual context. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, Baker 5th graders challenged the student body to identify actions they were taking to support our planetary home (check out their video below!). In addition, Baker Student Council representatives are planning new ways to host representative elections and the Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is meeting and planning for the upcoming Day of Silence. This Friday teachers and students are participating in the YWCA Stand Against Racism virtual day. So proud of our Baker students and their leadership during this time. Meaningful, experiential, and connected learning matters now more than ever.

Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate,
Carly Andrews
Head of School

P. S. Check out our new video and episode 6 of the K-8 Collaborative , which features Baker teachers Aimee Frank, Kerah Sandler, and Melissa Makagon in a conversation about project-based learning.
2020-2021 Tuition Invoices
We are busy planning for the 2020-2021 school year and wanted to alert you that tuition invoices will be e-mailed next week. Look for these in your in-boxes. While tuition invoices for June 1 are always sent at this time of year, we know that this has been a time of in-box overload.

In the midst of this time, we are working harder than ever to ensure that your children are at the center of our plans and that the promise of a Baker education is delivered.
Updated Spring 2020 - Calendar Highlights

Stand Against Racism
Different Locations. Shared Experience. A Community United.

Students will be talking about how to participate in Stand Against Racism with their teachers and advsors tomorrow. While this year's event looks different than last year when we gathered together, the YWCA has put together information to help guide your participation. Learn more here.
Baker's 5K Tradition Continues
This year's 5K will be a bit different than in year's past, but the tradition will continue! Thank you to Jelmar, our presenting sponsor, for another year of amazing support!

When : Friday, May 29

How: Mr. D and Ms. Chase will provide details to students in PE classes, but the plan is to train for the 5K, find ways to map the run safely where you live, and stay in touch with the Baker community through photos and videos.

Alternative Plans: We know that it will not work for all families to use Friday, May 29 as a day to participate - please feel free to run on May 30-31. We also know that not everyone can participate by running outdoors. Mr. D and Ms. Chase will work with your family to find an alternative plan!

T-shirts: Yes, there will be t-shirts! Teachers will be collecting sizes in the next week. Logistics will be shared soon to arrange pick-up. Purchase a parent t-shirt for $10 here.

More details will be communicated in the weeks to come!

Sponsorship Details: If you would like to sponsor the 5K or know someone who would, please learn more about our sponsor packages here or contact Rachel Yantis.

Garden Resources for Families from BPO Earth Day Chat

The BPO was honored to host two engaging speakers for our Earth Day virtual chat via Zoom. Leslie Shad, Founder and Co-Lead of Natural Habitat Evanston and Becca Lewandowski, Chef and Gardener Extraordinaire, provided insight and advice on ways we can have enjoyable and productive outdoor and window space even during our shelter-in-place.

If you were not able to participate live, we invite you to listen to the recording here .  Our speakers have also complied resources for us to get started and learn more.   Please take a look!

This virtual chat was such a success that we would like to host another one in the month of May. If you would like to nominate a speaker, please send a note to   bpo@bakerdemschool.org .
Thank You from Baker Teachers!

Baker Parents - thank you from our Baker teachers for your photos, cards, and videos. And, thank you to the BPO for our gift card surprises!
