October 12, 2023

Dear Baker families,

At Baker we don’t just think outside the box, we cut the box, design the box and play inside the box! Family, community, play and creativity; these things are at the heart of our mission at Baker and they will all come together at our 11th Annual Baker Family Cardboard Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 14th from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Inspired by the Global Day of Play, we come together in a day of creative play based around the perennial favorite toy of children around the world, the cardboard box. With kids in the creative lead, moms, dads, neighbors, grandparents and friends, design, cut, tape, paint and decorate their cardboard creations. In past years we have seen a trojan horse, trains, cars, airplanes, a time machine, dollhouses, haunted houses, cat scratching posts, robots, a giant pencil and more!

After we build and clean up, we will take time to admire and play with all of our creations. Leftover cardboard will be shared with the middle school science program for their springtime cardboard boat regatta, so nothing goes to waste! Families will need to carefully haul (or not so carefully stuff) their creations in their cars for more hours of fun at home or kindly add to the recycling bin outside. We realize that fall is a busy time for sports and activities, so come when you can and leave when you need to. It is truly one of the best days of the year for me. I am always inspired by the enthusiasm, collaboration and ingenuity of our Baker families. Please RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 12th so I can best prepare for space and materials. Please remember to bring a cutting tool (box cutter or heavy scissors) and some strong tape (duct tape or packaging tape) and we will provide the rest!

This event is in conjunction with our fall admissions open house so if you know of anyone who might be interested in touring Baker with the option of staying for the Cardboard Challenge, please share this link so they can RSVP for that event.

See you there!

Lynn Lyons, LICSW - Clinical social worker and psychotherapist, speaker, trainer, and author of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and The Anxiety Audit.

Anxiety and worry are normal and expected parts of learning and growing, but when children and teens face challenges cognitively, socially, or emotionally, anxiety can step in and take over. Anxiety can be overwhelming and rigid, but it’s also based on predictable patterns that can be shifted once we learn how it operates.

Based on current research and over 30 years of clinical experience, Lynn Lyons, LICSW presents a strategic approach based on skill-building, with prevention the preferred path. The goal? Using creativity, connection, and energy, parents will learn how to increase their child’s flexibility, support the tolerance of uncertainty, and emotionally and preventatively equip themselves and those they love as we all move forward.

Ms. Lyons travels internationally as a speaker and trainer on the subject of anxiety, its role in families, and the need for a preventative approach at home and in schools. She is a sought-after expert, appearing in the New York Times, Time, NPR, Psychology Today, Good Morning America, and other media outlets. Ms. Lyons is a featured expert in the documentary Anxious Nation.

With a special interest in breaking the generational cycle of worry in families, Ms. Lyons is the author/coauthor of several books and articles on anxiety, including Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous & Independent Children, and the companion book for kids, Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids. Her latest book for adults and teenagers, The Anxiety Audit: 7 Sneaky Ways Anxiety Takes Hold and How to Escape Them, was released in 2022.

Ms. Lyons is the co-host of the popular podcast Flusterclux.

This event is suitable for youth 12+. It will not be recorded or live streamed.
