Bunker Restoration

bunker resotration

Remember the old concrete bunkers that held the original lighting at the base of the cross? Well, if you haven't been to the cross in a while, you already would not recognize them. They are going through a significant restoration. The first phase is finished, which got them all cleaned up, painted, patched, and sheeting on the top of them. The next phase is in beginning stages, which will have a beautiful covering on top of them that contains information about the cross, both with text and pictures. It will also include some directional information looking across the horizon from each bunker, and one bunker will share the salvation story. It is anticipated these will be complete, or nearly complete, in time for the eclipse on August 21. So be sure and check them out next time you're up there!

Electrical Lines are Gone!

I've been telling you the past few months this was coming - and now it's done! The electrical poles and electrical lines that used to run up the hill to the cross and clutter the landscape are gone. Because of the project that happened this past February/March, where a trench was dug from the cross to the Welcome Center, and an electrical line laid to connect the two, there was no longer need for the unsightly poles and lines going up the hill to the cross. A big thanks to Steve McKeown, and to Dave Condor and the All Electric staff, and to Southern Illinois Electric Coop for making this a reality!

Thank You to "I am Java" Coffee Shop

I am Java A big thanks goes out to a Murphysboro coffee house for their donation to Bald Knob Cross last month. They sponsor a "giveback Friday" each month, featuring a local non-profit. 10% of their receipts from giveback Friday goes to the non-profit, as well as their tips for a whole month. Thanks to I am Java's generosity, Bald Knob Cross received $440 from this community connection. Go check them out - they have wonderful coffee, coffee drinks, muffins, and a lot more!

One recent review on their Facebook page says "Great people, great service, great coffee, and great price!"

I am Java is located 715 North 14th Street, Murphysboro. Thank you, I am Java!!

Business Card Winner

At the Welcome Center, there is a jar in which you can drop your business card, and the lucky person receives a free gift from the Bald Knob gift shop. This month's winner was Traci Reuchmann, President of Leaps of Love in Highland, Illinois. Congratulations, Tracy!

New Private Event Area

For several months, we have been making some changes that will make it possible for your group to host a private event at the Welcome Center - and NOW WE ARE READY FOR YOU!  You've spoken, and we've listened to your needs. The area with the round tables, near the kitchen, is now available for groups up to 50 people (60 if you're ok being really tight) to reserve for your church group, special celebration, family reunion, etc.

If you're interested in more information on hosting a private event, contact Tonya at or 618-713-8516.

Did You Know...?
did you know Bald Knob Cross is the second highest point in southern Illinois? Since I became connected with Bald Knob about 2 ½ years ago, everything I was told and that I read listed Bald Knob as the highest point. But I recently learned that Williams Hill in Pope County is actually slightly higher than Bald Knob. It's important to be well-informed!
Inaugural Dinners Great Success

Inaugural Dinner Our first fund-raising dinners are behind us, and we have deemed them a great success! We learned a lot, and we will definitely keep this as an annual event, to most likely be held in the summer months in various locations. Bald Knob Cross profited almost $5,000 on the two dinners.

A huge thank you to Debbie Pittman, Chairperson of the Funds Development Committee, to our five sponsors for the dinners - Black Diamond in Marion, Southern Illinois Healthcare, Polar Investments, Heartland Mechanical, and First Bank and Trust in Murphysboro. Thank you also to our Funds Development Committee, and to Hedman Vineyards and Walker's Bluff for hosting the dinners. Watch for more information on next year's dinner!
