4th of July Fireworks

fireworksThe Fourth of July evening was a wet one in southern Illinois, but there were still lots of fireworks to be seen from the top of Bald Knob Mountain. Approximately 125 people gathered to watch "silent fireworks" from a distance.

While some communities postponed their fireworks, there were many that were able to still hold their displays, and they were beautiful in all directions against the night sky. It was a fun, quiet evening as we witnessed fireworks celebrations from afar.

Have You Seen the New Signs?

New signage has begun at the Welcome Center, and also on the road on the way up. The most prominent is a new sign installed over the main doors at the entrance to the Welcome Center, providing identification for the building. Other coordinating signs have been added to provide visitors with helpful information to make their experience at Bald Knob the best it can be.

On your next trip up, you might also notice a similar sign at the turnoff onto the Bald Knob Road, with directional and mileage signs that accompany. We have been working on this project for several months and are delighted to have these installed!

Meet Some Volunteers

Joann and Morgan If you visit the Welcome Center in the near future, here are some smiling faces you might encounter.

Joann Sharp and her granddaughter Morgan are regular Welcome Center hosts on the weekends, and they fill in at other times when needed. Joann and Morgan are from Cobden. Thanks to both of you for all your hard work!

Sandy Sandy McWhorter is from Anna, and can usually be found at the Welcome Center on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but she fills in whenever is needed that she can be there. Sandy coordinates the schedules of the other volunteers, helping to insure that we have coverage at the Welcome Center at all times. Sandy also helps keep us stocked with snacks, chips, ice cream, etc. Thanks so much, Sandy!
Beautiful Crossflame Event!

It was a gorgeous evening for on June 17th when a 75 member youth choir from the Hickory, North Carolina, area performed atop Bald Knob Mountain! They were en route to Chicago where they would be giving multiple performances, and we were blessed to have them stop over in our area and provide a 'mini-concert' to all who came out.

Thank you Crossflame Youth Choir!
New Planters Installed

planters Through a generous donation, we have recently installed 6 beautiful new planters at the cross and Welcome Center - two at the Welcome Center entrance, two on the pillars going up to the cross, and two at the base of the cross. We have also received some birdbaths, flowers and plants, and Caretaker Jeff has been working hard to give a beautiful face lift to the landscaping.

A huge thank you to our donors, and more pictures to come as the landscape continues!
