Spring Blooms with Big Names

in Baldwin County

Now is the time for all young Dems to come to the aid of their party!

Recently-elected Democratic National Committee Vice-Chair David Hogg will headline the rally when Baldwin County joins Democrats from around Alabama to team up in Pensacola March 8 with the Gay Valimont special election campaign for U.S. House of Representatives.

Hogg claimed the national spotlight as a gun rights advocate in the wake of the Parkland school shooting. He organized the nationwide Leaders We Deserve and last month became the youngest-ever DNC Vice Chair.

Leaders We Deserve is an organization built to lift dynamic young Democrats into office. There is literally no better time for young Baldwin Democrats to find their voice and step into leadership!

Sign up to be a part of this exciting event and to help Gay Valimont win Matt Gaetz's old seat. We can make the most of the April 1 special election to win one of only three House seats Democrats need to regain control of the U.S. Congress.

The event is part of the Alabama Blue Tour, organized by the United Democratic Volunteers of Alabama (UDVAL), a statewide effort that funnels volunteers into important political races.

Save the date now for "A Candid Conversation With Doug Jones" as the former Alabama Senator returns again this year for what has become a rite of spring in Baldwin County.

Jones will mix and mingle in a Q and A with Baldwin Dems at a wine tasting 6-9 p.m. Sun., May 18 at the Southern Grove Vineyard near Fairhope.

Last year's event at the Nix Center netted about $10,000 now earmarked to support Democratic candidates in this year's municipal and next year's state elections.

Jones will host a “fireside chat” style discussion as he welcomes questions on the topics of the day, focusing on the "chaos that Washington D.C. is in right now."

Please join us for a memorable evening with appetizers, desserts and locally produced wines in the charm of sprawling vineyards and elegant fireside dining 6-9 p.m. Sunday May 18.

In these troubling days, now is the time to connect and contribute to keeping Democracy alive through local action.

Mark your calendar now!

Stay tuned for reservation information coming very soon.

Civil Rights Icon Bob Zellner:

Direct Action to Drive Change

“Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Eastern Shore Democrats are pleased to present Civil Rights icon and fellow ESD member Bob Zellner as he shares his moving personal story and reflects on the power of direct action to drive change. The event will take place on Thursday evening, April 10, beginning at 6:30 pm, at Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship, 1150 Fairhope Ave.

Bob grew up in Brewton, Alabama, where both his father and grandfather were members of the Ku Klux Klan. While in college in Montgomery in the 1950’s, he met and was inspired by Dr. King, ultimately choosing to devote his life to the cause of non-violence.

As the very first white Field Organizer for the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Bob was arrested and severely beaten numerous times. Over the years, he had the privilege of working alongside the most consequential leaders of the Civil Rights movement including Fannie Lou Hamer and John Lewis.

Bob’s 2008 autobiography, The Wrong Side of Murder Creek, was adapted for the screen and released as the full-length film “Son of the South” in 2021.

Bob will be joined in conversation on April 10th by fellow Fairhopean Gary Moore, a long-time Civil Rights attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and a founding member of the Commission on Racial Justice and Reconciliation of the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.

Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door.

ACTION ITEM OF THE MONTH:

A short drive across the bridge and a few hours of your time can put us within two seats of winning back our U.S. Congress

(Oh, and did we mention a campign rally with Leaders We Deserve founder and DNC Vice Chair David Hogg?)

We’re all sharing a shudder of horror as we watch our democracy teetering on the brink.

We can’t just watch this happen, we tell ourselves. What can we do? Right here and right now?

What if we could help tip the balance of Congress so Dems would have a roadblock to Trump’s anti-democratic agenda?

Guess what? We actually can!

One of the vacancies in the U.S. Congress is in Florida District 1, right across the bridge in Pensacola. The resignation of disgraced Congressman Matt Gaetz is creating a once-in-a-generation opportunity to flip Florida’s 1st Congressional District in a special election April 1.

Fl-01 has been a Republican stronghold for decades, but shifting voter trends and the low turnouts of special elections have cleared a path to victory For Democrat Gay Valimont. Special elections are low turnout affairs, meaning that a well-executed voter outreach program can dramatically results. Only about 15 percent of Republicans turned out for a primary last month won by Trumper Jimmy Patronis. We remember him from his TV ad-nauseums.

Getting a Democratic win in Gaetz’s territory means:

  • Maximizing Democratic turnout to 75 percent
  • Winning 60 percent of Independent voters
  • Aggressive early voting and vote-by-mail campaigns to lock in votes before election day.

That's where Baldwin County Democrats come in.

Baldwin County Dems are organizing canvassing parties to knock doors March 8, and March 22, as part of the Alabama Blue Tour sponsored by United Democratic Volunteers of Alabama. This is the same effort that turned out nearly 50 BCD canvassers for several Sundays in a row to work with the Harris-Vance campaign in Pensacola last fall.

DNC Vice Chair David Hogg will headline a campaign rally March 8 and another big name in Southern Democratic politics may be in the works for March 22.

Democrats from as far away as Winston County will be teaming up with Baldwin County Democrats to claim their role in this historic campaign. And all we have to do is drive across the bridge!

Click here to sign up for the big event. Please note that the registration says 10-6, but canvassing shifts generally run about three hours. Not that quick on your feet? We need drivers, too.

If you’d rather fight the Trump regime from the comfort of your own living room, the Valimont campaign also needs help with phone banking. They host trainings every Monday and Tuesday, virtually. Please find available shifts on Mobilize.us/gayforcongress. Experienced phone bankers can go ahead and follow this link: https://www.openvpb.com/vpb_bycode/B72116A-319032 .

“Phone banking is just as critical as canvassing and available to volunteers who may have issues with mobility. There is a job for everyone,” says Valimont Field Director Erin Begley.

Baldwin County Democrats have a busy year ahead as we recruit and campaign for Democrats in local elections and form government relations teams. But, until April 1, getting Gay Valimont elected to the U.S. Congress is Job 1. We only have another month!

Baldwin County Democrats were key to electing Doug Jones to Congress in a special election in 2017. We worked to elect Shomari Figures last year. We can do it again! Let’s step up again to elect Gay Valimont in Fl-01 and trim the Republican control of Congress.

We only lose when we stop fighting!

Blues News

from Around Alabama

Among other timely political topics, this year's Blue Conference will feature a panel discussion on recruiting and organizing campaigns for municipal elections, a top priority for Baldwin County Democrats in the coming months.

We are urging as many Baldwin County Dems in leadership roles as possible to attend and will arrange ride sharing. Tabling opportunities are also available.

But you don't have to be in leadership to enjoy Blue Conference. Everyone is welcome! Please email bcdchair@baldwindemocrats.org. if interested.

First-Ever In-Person Meeting

of Alabama County Chairs

Democratic County Chairs from across the state met in Birmingham Feb. 15 and unanimously voted to form the Alabama Democratic County Chairs’ Association.

BCD Chair Robyn Monaghan was among 31 of about 60 Alabama county chairs who attended the meeting.

“Where there is a Democratic County Chair there is a Democratic County Committee that is organizing, recruiting, training, canvassing, and protecting our elections,” said Marshall County Democratic Chair Susan McKenney.

Alabama’s Democratic County Chairs did not have a way to organize with each other, according to McKenney who provides most of the training to County Committees through the ADP’s Vice Chair of County Affairs. Associations of County Chairs are standard in most other states, many having been organized decades ago, McKenney said.

McKenney was elected to serve as the group’s first Chair. Other elected officers were Lawrence County Chair Marcus Echols as Vice Chair, Fayette County Chair Richard White Jr. as Secretary, and Houston County Chair Linda Turner as Treasurer.

The County Chairs also organized by U.S. Congressional Districts and elected leaders to represent them on the Association’s Executive Board. White said that this was part of the group’s effort to make sure all the Chairs were represented fairly.

“There was a lot of talent in the room,” said White. “Our goal is to take advantage of our strengths and build on it.”

“If we’re going to start winning elections again, it will take formed, active and sustainable county committees to do it. This association makes that possible from this time forward," Turner said.
