Our Ballard

Barry Malcolm Hawley (December 6, 1938 - July 22, 2017)
On behalf of Ballard Alliance members, board and staff, we'd like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Hawley family, friends and business associates. Barry passed away peacefully on July 22, 2017 and we wanted to share an invitation to his Celebration of Life on September 20th at the Ballard (Shilshole) Bay Club.

A third generation Ballardite, Barry graduated from Ballard High School in 1957 and the University of Washington in 1961, where he was a member of Sigma Nu. Upon graduation from UW he joined the Army reserves. Following active service, he began a commercial real estate career that would span 55 years.

"Barry was a fixture in the Ballard community and he will be greatly missed. Many of our members knew him as the past Past President of the Ballard Chamber of Commerce and this leadership exemplifies Barry's love for and involvement in the Ballard neighborhood," said Ballard Alliance Executive Director Mike Stewart.

Please come out to celebrate the life of this thoughtful and positive member of the Ballard community.

Ballard's beer scene has been going strong for decades. Larger breweries, such as Redhook, were born in Ballard and the neighborhood keeps producing more breweries with expanded and original concepts.

For instance, Lucky Envelope's tagline is "culturally inspired beer", as they draw their inspiration from the founders' Chinese-American traditions.
Just down Leary Way is the Peddler Brewing Company, microbrewery and tasting room. In addition to great beer-making, a love for biking is the theme behind Peddler Brewing Company and true to their passion they have been known to deliver beer by way of bike.
In the extremely competitive craft brewery world, our Ballard Brew district has a true sense of community. Follow their social media feeds and see how many special batches, events and charities in which our Ballard brewers collaborate.

While Obec was working on filling each of their 12 taps with their own creation during their grand opening, they shared their handles with Stoup and Lucky Envelope beer. So what differentiates Obec (translated from Czech means "community") from their brewing neighbors besides the Czech, British, German plus Northwest style offerings? They have a tavern license, which allows them to serve wine as well.

Our hoppy corner of the neighborhood is truly becoming a beer lovers destination and the Ballard Alliance is pleased to welcome new businesses like Obec Brewing to the neighborhood.  Take some time to visit Obec in person and let us know what you think!

FUN FACT FOTO
It is that time of year again, almost.  School will be back in session and we must bid adieu to summer soon. Here is a group of Loyal Heights elementary school children in 1944 - having their cake and eating it too.
