The Chinese New Year is almost here and 2018 is the year of the Earth Dog. According to the Chinese Horoscope, 2018 will be an all-around great year. However, it may be exhausting. What better way to rest, relax and prepare for the year ahead than to enjoy one of the beautifully crafted Chinese New Year inspired beers from Lucky Envelope Brewing?

Nestled in the core of the Ballard Brewery District, which boasts more than ten breweries and taprooms within blocks of one another, is Lucky Envelope Brewing. Brewing with ingredients such as, Chinese squash, Chinese smoked black tea and lychee fruit, exemplifies Lucky Envelope's ability to stretch the envelope (pun intended) on the rules of craft brewing in a highly competitive market. It is this level of detail, creativity and connection to culture that sets this brewery apart and is yet another reason our Ballard Brewery District offers more than any other in this region.  This infusion of Chinese culture is especially important to co-founder and Brewmaster, Barry Chan.

"Our Assistant Brewer Josh and I are particularly excited for our Lychee Sour and Buddha's Hand Citron IPA. We have been focused on 'culturally inspired beers' and both of these beers combine elements of Asian food culture with traditional brewing techniques," said Chan.

Lucky Envelope Brewing's co-founders, Raymond Kwan and Barry Chan are of Chinese decent. Kwan and Chan incorporate their backgrounds and experiences in all aspects of what they offer their patrons. In addition to releasing five culturally inspired beers, they are sharing the Chinese New Year traditions with a two-day celebration featuring red envelope giveaways, local food trucks offering Asian-fusion cuisine, and traditional Chinese New Year décor. Additionally, they have limited edition, Year of the Earth Dog Lucky Envelope t-shirts for sale (while supplies last). This might be a fun gift for all you dogs out there born in 1958, 1970, 1982 or 1994.

In addition to their flagship beers, Lucky Envelope's brewers are releasing these specialty craft beers during the celebration ( Here is a sneak peek of the Brewer's description ):

        Buddha's Hand Citron IPA
- 6.6% ABV - 70 IBU - This limited release IPA is brewed with aromatic Buddha's Hand Citron and is only available around Chinese New Year. Zest from this uniquely shaped fruit imparts flavors reminiscent of fresh cut lemon and crushed lemon candies.
Lychee Sour
- 5.4% ABV, 5 IBU - A limited amount of sour beer brewed with lychee fruit which has notes of juicy gewürztraminerwine and rose petals.
Double Happiness Barrel-Aged Porter
- 9.2% ABV, 43 IBU - Imperial Porter double barrel-aged in Merlot and Westland 5-Malt whiskey barrels. Red stone fruit and oak tannin combine with vanilla, smoke and caramel into a delightfully complex beer. Named after the "Double Happiness" Chinese characters which appears often during Chinese New Year celebrations.
Mijiaya Historic Chinese Beer
- 5.8% ABV, 2 IBU - Named after the 5,000 year-old Mijiaya archaeological site in Shaanxi, Northern China. We brewed this special Chinese New Year release based on the starch and grains found in various brewing vessels excavated from the dig site. Brewed with barley, Job's tears, millet, Chinese squash, lily flowers, and yam, the resulting beer is flowery, light, and clean.
Tea-Smoked Helles Lager
- 5.0% ABV, 22 IBU - Our house specialty Rauch Helles is infused with Chinese smoked black tea (lapsang souchong). The biscuit and grain notes of the base beer are complimented by the tea's smoky pine and sweet whiskey flavors.

Join our members, Lucky Envelope Brewing, on Friday, February 16th and Saturday, February 17th in celebrating a 2018 filled with good fortune, happiness and delicious craft beers. Arrive early each day to receive a celebratory Lucky Envelope with special coupons inside. Lucky Envelope is located at 907 NW 50th Street, Seattle, WA 98107.
A2MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ON THE NOBLE FIR

Ellen and Rick Kelly, Owners

5316 BALLARD AVE NW
SEATTLE, WA 98107

What is your favorite aspect of owning a business in Ballard?
Ballard's business community is very close knit. Many of the business owners, managers and staff all know each other and we all help each other out. The Ballard residents are also a vital part of our thriving community. It is like a small town, you can't run out for a cup of coffee, run to the bank, or go grocery shopping without running into a friend.

What makes The Noble Fir unique?
In addition to being Ballard's original craft beer and cider tavern with all rotating taps featuring regional brews, we have over 500 hiking guides and trail maps for our guests to peruse while enjoying a cold one.

What do we want people to know about our business?
We are a husband and wife team who enjoy working our bar every day. We have established our own non-profit "Pints for Parks" and since opening in 2010, we've donated over $20,000 in proceeds to support Washington environmental conservation efforts.

What is our favorite place or thing to do in Ballard?
We routinely stretch our legs before opening by taking a walk down to the Locks, and then on to Golden Gardens and back. Lately we've been admiring the progress of the new Nordic Heritage Museum construction and look forward to its opening in the new location. And of course, we've wound down after many a long day listening to the great tunes on the Ballard Smoke Shop's jukebox!
