This Month in Ballooning
November 21st is Montgolfier Day, when we celebrate the first untethered manned flight in a hot air balloon, which took place on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France. Physicist Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes piloted the balloon, which was designed by brothers Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier. The balloon was made of silk and paper and reached an altitude of at least 500 feet. It traveled about 5.5 miles before landing safely after 25 minutes.
The flight was witnessed by thousands of people, including the royal family and Benjamin Franklin. It inspired a ballooning craze and paved the way for many advancements in aviation. To celebrate the flight, the pilots offered champagne to local farmers who were suspicious of the balloon descending from the sky. This tradition continues to this day!
