Two Comps This Week
The Viking Marching Band has a competition this Thursday up in Valencia; their performance/step-off time is 9:00 pm. (Since it is a school night, they will not stay for awards.) Then on Saturday, the band travels to Savanna High School in Anaheim for a 7:22 pm performance time. As usual, you will receive a school bus email with all the details for both tournaments.

For the Thursday tournament, students will leave directly from school around lunchtime. Your child will miss periods 5 and 6. This will be an excused absence, but they will be responsible for any work or tests they miss. Please have them tell their period 5 and 6 teachers they will be out on Thursday. Pickup will be at Samoh i in the evening, around 11 pm.

PLEASE NOTE: For this week's Friday rehearsal , please have your student wear their navy blue "retro" shirt. (That way they can get the chance to wash their royal blue practice shirt between comps!)
Fan Shirt Volunteer Needed
Some sizes of FAN SHIRTS are still available, but Viking mom May-may Chan will be out of town this weekend. Can anyone take over merchandise sales for her this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9? If so, please email her.

ALL BANDS
All-State Applications
All-State/CBDA recordings will be due to Mr. McKeown by Wednesday, November 27, via Google Drive. When he picks the top 20 students to submit, each of them will be given a code to upload their music and scales through the CBDA online system, which will close at 11:59 PM on December 2, 2019. Read auditioning/recording guidelines here.

If you receive a code from Mr. McKeown that allows you to submit your audition, you will need to pay a $55 student fee. And if you are selected for an honor ensemble, you will pay CASMEC a participation fee of approximately $450, due in mid-January.

The All-State ensembles will perform February 21-23, 2020, in Fresno, CA. Read more info on the CBDA Auditions page.

Jazz musicians: You will submit your recordings directly. Please talk to your teacher for more details.

Stairway VIP Reception Coordinator Needed
The Stairway band concert is coming up on March 26, 2020, and we need a coordinator plus a few volunteers to help set up our VIP reception, which occurs backstage after the concert. The VIP reception volunteers work with Samohi Orchestra Parent Mimi Chung — caterer and owner of Bowl Kitchen, who donates all of the food — to set up a VIP lounge with a light supper, beverages, and desserts, and then break it down and clean up after the reception.

This is a fun, relatively easy job that only happens once a year, and it's a nice way to welcome our guest conductors, donors, and board members to historic Barnum Hall and make them feel special! Please email [email protected] if you can be our next coordinator, or if you can help out in any way.
