Aid Station #9: Railway

Banff's history is connected to the expansion of railways across Canada. In 1883 the first transcontinental railway passed through Banff, connecting to Laggan Station in Lake Louise, and eventually all the way to the west coast, helping bring British Columbia in to Canada. The railway station in Banff is a two-storey, Arts & Craft style railway station, built in 1910. Originally built for the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was declared a heritage railway station by the federal government in 1991. Today, the railway station is used by the Rocky Mountaineer and Canadian Pacific Railway, as both a scenic visitor route and critical freight route across the country.

99.01%
A New Waste Diversion Record!

Thank you for helping the Banff Marathon achieve its world-leading sustainability goals.  The numbers are in and.... the 2017 Banff Marathon beat out last year's record of 98.6% waste diversion to reach an incredible  99.01%  diversion rate.  After sorting almost 755lbs of materials, we sent only 7.5lbs to the landfill!  This is less than 1 bag of garbage!!!
We also reduced our overall garbage production in general by 25% compared to 2016.  This means that we are not only diverting almost all of our waste from the landfill but we are finding ways to generate less overall waste.  Thanks to the Banff Marathon Sustainability Team and SustainDriven for making this happen!  The Banff Marathon strives to be the "Greenest" Marathon on the planet - read more about our world-leading sustainability initiatives HERE
