The violence and anger that swept through the capitol area on Wednesday brought with it highly disturbing images and thoughts. Parents and educators, as we seek to engage with and reassure our children, I encourage you to begin and to continue the exploration of the big and hard ideas of these days. Different children need different approaches. The ways you initiate or respond to these conversations will depend on your child's age and stage and learning style. But do not avoid the conversation. Pretending that there is nothing to see or talk about will not keep your child or family safer or healthier or happier in the long run. There are many resources available. I can provide references, and you can find them yourself, with a quick web search.
Take courage and comfort in this: you are not alone! Your church community is your children's church community too. I am here, praying for you and ready to talk with you. Your church family is here, ready to surround you with faith and love and encouragement. God is here, ready to affirm you as beloved.
