Worship this Sunday


Join us for worship this Sunday, January 12th as Pastor Matthew returns from vacation and we will recognize Baptism of the Lord Sunday.  This is the time every year when we hear the story of Jesus’ own baptism and we remember ours.  We will also celebrate communion together this Sunday.

Free Little Neighborhood Item of the Week


Our Free Little Neighborhood Item of the week is coffee or tea. Next time you’re at the grocery store pick up bags of coffee, boxes of tea, or even instant coffee packages so we can find a new way to care for our neighbors. 

Highland Annual Meeting 

Sunday, January 19th


Highland will have our annual meeting following worship on Sunday, January 19th. The purpose of the meeting will be to present annual reports from our committees, present the budget for 2025, elect the next class of elders, and approve the pastor’s terms of call.

Denise J. Dean, Executive Director of East Tennessee Freedom Schools will be guest speaker.  Reserved seats are $37 each or tables of 10 for $370.

Minister Bobby Fields (Maryville College graduate/and employee of Helen Ross McNabb) will be guest preacher with The Rev. Benjamin Lewis, Jr. as host pastor.  Music will be provided by Overflow.

Step off at 1 p.m. and march to Maryville College campus.

Community Celebration Program  

Clayton Center for the Arts  on the Maryville College Campus

 

Celebration will include participants from all over East Tennessee and beyond. Some participants include Spoken Word - RJ Hodge, Painting and Art works - Marc Burnette, Alcoa High Jasmine Andrews - Alcoa High School Concert Choir, Tracy Halter - William Blount Theater Department and more.


National Day of Prayer for Christian Unity

Saturday, January 18, at 1 p.m. at New Providence


Join faith communities from Blount County for the ecumenical observance, held every January, of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. There will be a gathering at New Providence at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18th in their sanctuary. Join others in this time of prayer. 

HAPPY HIGHLANDERS 2025 CALENDAR PLANNING

Tuesday, January 21st

 

Here we are in 2025, and it is time to plan Happy Highlander events for the year. At this meeting, we would love to hear your input as we plan what activities we will add to the calendar, and the frequency of HH events going forward. Do we continue to meet monthly? Do we have folks sign up to plan quarterly events? Lots to discuss, and we hope you will bring your lunch and join us at the church on Tuesday, January 21, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. as we hear your ideas for 2025.

Gospel of Luke Bible Study

Tuesdays and Wednesdays


Join Pastor Matthew for a Bible study on the Gospel of Luke beginning Tuesday, January 21st and going until March 5th. There will be a 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night Zoom option and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the church parlor. All you need is a Bible!

Prayers, Concerns and Joys

Please pray for our members, families, and friends.


We lift-up prayers for those among our community who are shut in. Be with them as they are separated in body from their loved ones.


Pam Clifford’s Sister - Pam lifted up prayers for her sister’s father-in-law, Bart, who had been in the hospital for 10 days and doctors are still not sure what it going on. Bart passed away on December 30th. Please hold Pam’s family in your prayers. 

 

Martha Vargas’ Friend - Martha lifts up prayers for her college roommate, Joan Fritz, who was recently diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer. She has successful surgery and her biopsy has come back with good news. Prayers for continued recovery.


LA Fires- Prayers for the community in and around Los Angeles as they are battling wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes.


Homeless - Let us pray for those who do not have a safe space to stay on any given night. As cold weather approaches, let us pray for those who are forced by life’s circumstances to sleep outside or wherever they can find. 


Family in Military - Millie lifts up prayers for those with family serving in the military.


Ukraine - Let us continue to keep the people of Ukraine in our prayers as the war there continues on well past two years. 


Palestine and Israel - Prayers for peace and reconciliation as the war between Palestine and Israel continues.
