Baptist Women in Ministry News
January 2020
A Word from Pam Durso
Today is a good Baptist Women in Ministry day! This is Lynn Brinkley's first day as our associate director. (pictured with Carolyn McKinstry--our preacher for the 2019 Annual Gathering).

Lynn comes to BWIM from Campbell University Divinity School, where she has served since May 2007 as director of church, alumni, and student relations. She has also as been an adjunct instructor, teaching in both Campbell University's Divinity School and the Christian Studies Department. Lynn earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in May 2014, a Master of Divinity degree from Campbell University Divinity School in May 2008, a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in May 1997, and a Bachelor of Science and Sociology degree from North Carolina State University in May 1992.

In addition to her role at Campbell, Lynn is associate minister at First Baptist of Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was ordained on May 4, 2014. Active in the Baptist community, Lynn is coordinator of the ministers division and women in ministry for the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, serves on the board of the Baptist Joint Committee and is currently a member of the BJC's executive committee, and was a board member of the Baptist Women in Ministry of North Carolina.
From 2015 to 2018, Lynn served on Baptist Women in Ministry's Leadership Team, and during her time on the team helped create the Mentoring Group Program and was an early mentor for the program. Lynn will serve as a mentor for the 2020-2021 cohort of the program, and as the new associate director, she will oversee the Mentoring Program, expand its reach, and enhance its content. She will also oversee the College Discernment Program, the Month of Preaching Emphasis, the Monthly BWIM Zoom Conversations, and will lead in visioning and implementing new BWIM adventures. Lynn will continue to live in North Carolina and will work remotely.

I am excited about Lynn's joining the staff. She has so many gifts as a leader, preacher, writer, and mentor! Her warmth, joyful enthusiasm, and endless energy will energize BWIM's work, and her experience with college and seminary students and her connections with Baptist denominational organizations will help BWIM expand its circles of influence and strengthen our work. I am thrilled that she said 'yes' to this new ministry calling, and I am thrilled to have opportunity to work closely with her in continuing to expand the ministries of our organization.

You can contact Lynn at her new email address: [email protected]

Today is a good day for Baptist Women in Ministry!
SUPPORTING BWIM
All the work Baptist Women in Ministry does and all the ways in which this organization contributes to the shift in Baptist culture are happening because of people like you who believe in and support our ministry and who share in our mission of affirming all those whom God has gifted for ministry.

We would love for you to make an end-of-year gift and join with us in this good work BWIM is doing. Your support makes all of this possible.
MONTH OF PREACHING
Baptist Women in Ministry welcomes your congregation to participate in Month of Preaching this February. Here's how you can fully participate:

First, invite a woman into your pulpit to preach one Sunday in February, and consider asking a first-time preacher—a high school, college, or seminary student. Be an encouraging church, one in which the voices of young women and new-to-preaching women will be celebrated and affirmed.

Second, fill out the form below to send information about your participation, including contact information for your preacher.

Third, email BWIM a picture of your preacher in the pulpit. We will post the pictures on Facebook and Instagram and celebrate together the preaching gifts of women. Email the picture to  [email protected] .

Fourth, use the four bulletin inserts that will be provided for the four Sundays of February. The inserts are available on the BWIM website and can be accessed by clicking  here . Print the inserts. Share them with your church members. Introduce your congregation to four significant Baptist preaching women.

Fifth, make a financial contribution to BWIM in honor of your preacher. Celebrate and affirm her preaching by giving to this organization whose mission is to advocate for and support the giftedness of women.

Baptist Women in Ministry invites you to remember and honor Baptist preaching women of the past and to celebrate the giftedness of Baptist woman who continue to proclaim the gospel today.

SECOND SHORT FILM FEATURING A FEMALE PASTOR RELEASED
“No. 2: Tonya,” produced in partnership by Baptist Women in Ministry and EthicsDaily.com, premiered on November 8, 2019 at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. The film is now available to stream online for free via BWIM.info and EthicsDaily.com.

Tonya Easterly Vickery, co-pastor of Cullowhee Baptist Church, with her husband, Jeffrey, is the focus of this second film in the series.

“This newest film release by BWIM-EthicsDaily features funny stories, sweet stories, and hard stories from Tonya's ministry journey and highlights her family's commitment to and their vision for shared ministry and leadership,” says Pam Durso, executive director of Baptist Women in Ministry and a producer of the film.

The 20-minute film is structured around Tonya’s work within a co-pastoring model, and it features interviews with Tonya, Jeffrey, their two daughters, and four church members.
“My friend, Tonya Vickery, is living proof that co-pastoring can be done and done beautifully.” The Vickerys have co-pastored Cullowhee Baptist for eighteen years.

“Theirs is a collaborative ministry,” adds Durso. “They share the pulpit. They make decisions as a team. And they have created a radically relational community at Cullowhee Baptist Church, where the priesthood of the believer is not simply a concept. It is the lived reality of their congregation.
ORDINATION RESOURCES

Every Friday, the blog , "THIS IS WHAT A MINISTER LOOKS LIKE," features an interview with an amazing minister. On January 10, Kat Kimmel , co-pastor of University Baptist Church, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was the minister interviewed. Kat IS what a minister looks like!
MINISTRY SEARCH RESOURCES
Baptist Women in Ministry offers resources and assistance both to churches searching for a minister and ministers searching for a new position.

SAFE CHURCHES and MINISTERS:
CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE RESOURCES
The Clergy Sexual Misconduct Task Force, a joint partnership between Baptist Women in Ministry and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, have released two significant resources developed for use by churches, seminaries, and partnering organizations.  "Safe Churches and Ministers"  is an educational video that introduces this tough topic and provides much-needed definitions, statistics, and stories that are designed to help churches, students, and leaders take seriously their responsibility in preventing abuse. The video is accompanied by a leader guide and a discussion guide and is available in both English and Spanish.

"Clergy Sexual Abuse Prevention Recommendations for Churches"  is a collection of prevention guidelines and documents intended to prompt congregations to create their own policies, procedures, processes and covenants.  This resource will assist churches in holding clergy and lay leaders accountable and will prepare churches to respond appropriately if abuse is reported.

The release of these two resources marks an important milestone in the work of the Task Force and we are committed to continue forward in our efforts. We ask that you pray for the task force as we keep working to bring attention to and educate those in our Baptist circles about clergy sexual abuse.
