Dear Parents and Guardians:
As the principal at Baraboo High School, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2022-’23 school year and introduce you to some of our main priorities, upcoming events, and other improvements at our school. It is an honor to serve as principal at BHS and be able to work so closely with our students and a dedicated staff as we continually strive to provide the best possible educational program and learning environment for our students.
We welcome a talented group of new staff (along with current staff who have transferred into new roles) this school year to Baraboo High School and look forward to the many ways that they will contribute to our positive school culture, forge strong student-teacher relationships, and provide educational opportunities for our students:

We continue to focus on using grading practices that are aligned with best educational practices. Please be sure to see a related and detailed article about our Baraboo High School grading practices later in this newsletter. For more information about other priorities, areas of emphasis, and important procedures and reminders, please read below:
- i-Ready Universal Screener–This year at BHS we have introduced the i-Ready universal screener for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students. i-Ready is considered a benchmark assessment that measures students in the areas of math and reading proficiency. The data from this test is immediate. Teachers know as soon as the student has finished what that student’s strengths are and where they have opportunities for growth. With this information, we can tell if a student is performing at or above grade level, as well as whether they are performing one or more years below grade-level. These immediate results help us in a lot of ways. If a teacher can see that they have a handful of students who are reading below grade level, they will know that they need to offer support to those students to do the grade-level work they are assigning. Maybe they can provide a graphic organizer, or a support guide, or offer a preview of the difficult work during enrichment to make the material more accessible. If a teacher can see that a handful of students already know the material, they can provide more advanced material to ensure those students are being appropriately challenged. Every student deserves at least a year’s worth of growth in a year’s time. It is easier for teachers to make this happen if they know what a student’s strengths are and where they need additional support.
- On-Time Behavior/Tardy Policy--We have generous 8-minute passing times, Monday through Friday. Students are expected to be in class and prepared to work when the bell rings for each class period. Tardiness disrupts both the orderly progress of the class and the daily progress of the student. During passing times, students have a one-minute warning bell. After the final bell rings, the teachers have been closing their doors to begin the class period. Students who are not in their class when the bell rings are considered tardy. Designated school staff monitor the hallways at the start of all class periods and direct students who are tardy to a central location in the building where the students sign in and then are keyed into their classroom by a school official. When a student reaches 4 tardies for each nine-week period, progressive consequences are assigned beginning with a detention.

Attendance Matters! A student who misses 2 days of school per month, excused or unexcused, or 18 days per school year, is considered chronically absent. It is important to note that a parent or guardian must excuse an absence with the high school office within three days of the absence. This applies to parent excuses and also absences excused by professional notes. Absences cannot be changed to excused after three days have passed, even with a professional note.

Cell Phones-- With each student having a chromebook, there is no educational reason for students to need their cell phones in the classroom anymore. Students are encouraged to leave cell phones in their lockers or to keep them off and put away while in the classroom. Students are permitted to use cell phones during passing times and at lunch. Students are expected to keep their personal device off and out of sight during class. Please help reinforce this at home. As parents we know it’s very important for you to be able to reach your students. Please know you may always call the main office at (608)355-3940, and we will contact your student or get a message to him or her within minutes.
- Our Homecoming celebration is fast approaching on Friday, October 7th. Events take place throughout the week to build school spirit and to encourage students to be involved in positive ways. Our Homecoming assembly will start at 11:45 a.m. on October 7th. Students will be dismissed following the assembly at 12:45 p.m. Hot lunch will be available in the cafeteria following the assembly and the buses will arrive between 1:15-1:30 p.m.. The Homecoming Parade begins at 3:45 p.m. You will find more information about Homecoming events inside this newsletter.

2022-2023 Senior Yearbook Information
- IMPORTANT PLEASE READ -
Dear Parents & Guardians of Senior Students,
All seniors (and other students who are graduating with the class of 2022) are invited to submit the following information for the 2022 yearbook. All information must be submitted by the deadline and follow the requirements in order to be included in the yearbook. After reading this information, if you have questions please contact Sarah Znidarsich at sznidarsich@barabooschools.net.
Senior Portraits
Senior portraits can be taken professionally or by a friend/family member. The photo that you submit needs to be a vertical (portrait) orientation. We recommend that you choose a portrait that focuses on your student’s face so they do not appear too small when printed in the yearbook. Photos should be in a 2” x 3” ratio (you may submit a 4 x 6 and we will do slight cropping to make it fit). Photos should be 300 dpi for best print quality. Visit this site if you need help resizing your image.
If you cannot afford to have a senior portrait taken but would like to be included in the yearbook, please contact Tim Znidarsich at tznidarsich@barabooschools.net by October 1, 2022 to make arrangements.
Senior Baby Photos
You have the option to submit a photo of your student as a baby (one year or younger is ideal). These photos do not have a size or quality requirement. We will crop the photos as needed. Please try to choose an image that is not blurry. Senior baby photos should be submitted digitally. If you do not have a digital file, you can digitize your baby photo in one of the following ways:
- Take a photo of your printed baby photo using a camera (your phone camera should be just fine). If you choose this option, make sure there is no glare on your photo and that you hold your camera parallel to the photo so the image is not distorted.
- Take your photo to Walgreens or Walmart and use their scanners in order to digitize the photo. Employees will be able to help you with this process in-store.
- Use a scanner at home to digitize your photo.
*** If all of these options are not possible for you, we have a scanner in W114 at BHS that we can use to digitize your baby photo. If you submit a physical photo, please include the student’s name and the parent’s phone number and address on the back of the photo.
All senior portraits and baby photos must be submitted to yearbook@barabooschools.net by December 2, 2022. In the email, please include the full name of the student associated with the information.

BHS Grading- Current Status/Progress | |
|
For the past several years, Baraboo HS has been researching, evaluating, and improving grading practices to increase student learning. Grades are, by definition, tools used to communicate student performance. Accurate and meaningful communication about the progress of learning is essential for students to reach their fullest learning potential. Unfortunately, traditional percentage-based grades offer little in the way of meaningful, accurate communication of learning and struggle to reflect the complex thinking that happens in today's classrooms.
Baraboo High School staff have used board approved national and state curricular standards to design Baraboo High School Priority Standards. These Priority Standards articulate the essential knowledge and skills associated with each content area and include rubrics that are used to measure and communicate student progress toward mastery of these essential standards. Student grade reports not only include letter grades, but also current levels of proficiency in each curricular standard, as well as work habits, giving students and parents meaningful information about the progress of learning.
These highly vetted and researched practices have shown to increase achievement in classrooms across the country and, having used these practices for years at BHS, we have experienced the benefits. Teachers new to these practices have experienced its positive outcomes in their classrooms. One teacher said of her students' writing skills, "I have seen more growth in a week than I saw in a month last year." Another teacher said of rigor in her class, "It has blown up...that, to me, is amazing. My kids have learned more and have demonstrated a more thorough understanding of physiology...students find the content more approachable as they know exactly what they need to do to move forward."

Strive for the best grades you’ve ever earned, meet new people, experience different extracurricular activities, get involved, and find your niche! Find a positive peer group that values the same things that you do. Make the most of it! Stay in touch with your Link Crew Leaders! Ask questions! This is the foundation of your high school! Enjoy your year!
SOPHOMORES
Goal setting time! Start thinking about meeting with your counselor to discuss your ACP(Academic & Career Plan) for high school and beyond. Be thinking about what questions you may have about how to achieve your goals.
Juniors
It’s a big year! Start narrowing down your interests and looking into schools, jobs, and programs that will meet your needs after you graduate. Take campus tours and college visits with your family to help make your decisions.
CAMPUS VISIT DAYS
One of the best ways for a prospective student and his/her parents/guardians to determine if a college is a good choice is to visit the campus. Typically, students should start looking at colleges during their junior year and visiting campuses of interest. In addition to providing the opportunity to meet with admission personnel, campus visits allow a student to see the campus via a guided tour. Students who want to meet with faculty, coaches, or other university staff may also have appointments prearranged.
Nothing gets you more excited about college than visiting a campus! It’s also one of the best ways to get acquainted with the ins and outs of campus life. Guided tours are filled with facts on what to expect from your academic and student life. You’ll also meet with an admissions representative, preview programs, and meet with staff from student services, admissions, financial aid, academic departments, and possibly current students!
College Representatives/Military Recruiters Visiting BHS
Another great way to receive information from a specific school or branch of the military is to meet with a representative. Reps schedule visits regularly and will be setting up meetings during Enrichment and Lunch periods throughout the fall. Please check the Student Services Google Classroom for announcements and watch the screen in Student Services for the schedule of upcoming visitors. You might even score some college swag or get an application fee waived!
Seniors
It’s finally here! Your last year! Make it a good one! Keep your grades and attendance in check! The colleges and employers are watching and asking!
It’s important to finish strong.
If you are college bound, you should be working on applications! If you have any questions, please stop in Student Services and make an appointment to meet with your counselor!
If you are asking people to write letters of recommendation, please visit the Students section of the High School Webpage. Go to Student Services/School Counseling/Scholarships/Letter of Recommendation Request Form to complete the formal request. These recommendations can be used later for Scholarships as well so remind your writer that you may be back in January to request another copy; tweaked to reflect scholarship rather than college entrance.

FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) HELP
College Goal Wisconsin will be held at UW Baraboo on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the Lange Center on the UW Baraboo Campus

Although a technical college or university education is expensive, financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans are available to make college affordable. To understand the process to apply for financial aid, seniors who are planning to continue their education after high school are encouraged to attend College Goal Wisconsin with their parents/guardians. College Goal Wisconsin is an event in which families can receive free assistance completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). This is the form that colleges require students to complete to be considered for financial aid. Students complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov. Students applying online will receive their FAFSA application results faster than if applying by mail. Information submitted over the internet is completely secure and the process is easier because only questions are asked that apply to the student’s situation. At College Goal Wisconsin, there will be financial aid officers from various colleges across the state to answer questions while the family is completing the FAFSA.

Early College Credit Program (ECCP) and Start College Now (SCN) Paperwork due OCTOBER 1
Any students planning to take college courses on the UW Platteville/ Baraboo Campus or Madison College during 2nd semester of this school year, were invited to attend the Early College Credit Program (ECCP) and Start College Now (SCN) meeting during homeroom on September 15 in the Commons.
Students, please remember that the packet you received is due back to Student Services no later than OCTOBER 1. If you have any questions, please stop in Student Services and see your counselor or Ms. Saldivar.
Test Optional Post-Secondary Institutions
This is the list of colleges and universities that have gone test-optional for the admissions process this school year and potentially beyond. Please continue to check with your individual institution for their most up-to-date information and policies regarding ACT test scores.
Senior Attendance
Per School Board Policy 345.62 High School Graduation Exercises (Commencement), Seniors must attend school at least 90% of the school days/class periods in both the first and second semesters of their senior year.
The 90% is defined as missing no more than 9 full days or 45 class periods (four class periods plus homeroom/enrichment), or no more than 9 of any one class period per semester, including homeroom/enrichment. Students on a reduced school day are required to be in attendance 90% of their scheduled class periods, and may not miss more than 9 class periods per semester in any one class.
The following absences are not included toward the 90% attendance:
Family emergencies communicated to a school administrator
School activities
Absences due to religious or tribal obligations
Absences excused via a professional note, school nurse, or social worker
Pre-approved and documented post-secondary visits
Pre-approved family trips that cannot be scheduled at any other time
Funerals
The principal or the principal’s designee may use discretion in excusing a student’s absence for extenuating circumstances.
- The school will monitor student absences. If a student is on trend to exceed the total number of allowable absences, the high school administration will convene a meeting with the student, student’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s), and school social worker to develop a plan of services to improve attendance.
- If a student exceeds the total number of allowable absences, a letter will be sent stating that the student is ineligible to participate in the graduation ceremony. However, the parent/legal guardian and/or student may request a meeting with the high school administration for the purpose of creating a plan detailing how the student may participate in the graduation ceremony.
- Participated in practice for graduation and abides by the rules for participation in the ceremony established by the principal (free from the influence/use of drugs and alcohol, proper dress, no noisemakers, etc.).
This policy is in place for all seniors, including those who have reached the age of 18. It will not prevent students from receiving their diploma if they have met the credit requirements.
Senior SEIP
Per School District of Baraboo Board of Education Policy 345.6, students are required to complete and participate in the Senior Exit Interview Portfolio process (SEIP) in order to graduate from Baraboo High School.
The timelines for portfolio items due varies depending on whether a senior is an Early Grad or Regular Grad. However, every student must submit a completed portfolio and participate in the interview process in order to meet graduation requirements.
Early Graduates
If you are planning to graduate at the end of first semester, you must submit a letter of intent to graduate early (see Board Policy 345.61). Please speak with your counselor to get more information. An outline of the letter can be picked up from Ms. Saldivar. The letters are due October 15th.

High School Spring Sports Information
If your child is interested in participating in a winter sport, you will need to register your child in the Parent Portal which will be available starting October 10th. Here is a link to find where to register. You will need your students 9 digit school ID number which can be found under the Today tab in the Message Center. Once you have the school ID number go back to the Message Center and click on the Surveys tab at the top of the page. Fees can be paid online or with a check or cash in the high school office. Sport fees are not added into your account until the athletic office enters your child into the specific sport in Infinite Campus. If you are not sure if your son/daughter will need a physical, please contact Renee Teasdale at 355-3940, Ext. 2022.
WIAA Physicals
WIAA physicals are based on the date of April 1. Physicals dated prior to April 1, 2021 are no longer valid. Physicals dated on or after April 1, 2021 will be good for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. Physicals are good for TWO SCHOOL YEARS, not two years from the date of the physical.

Nuestra celebración de Homecoming se acerca rápidamente el viernes 7 de octubre. Los eventos se llevan a cabo a lo largo de la semana para desarrollar el espíritu escolar y alentar a los estudiantes a participar de manera positiva. Nuestra asamblea de Homecoming comenzará a las 11:45 am el 7 de octubre. Los estudiantes saldrán después de la asamblea a las 12:45 pm. El almuerzo caliente estará disponible en la cafetería después de la asamblea y los autobuses llegarán entre la 1:15 pm y la 1:30 pm. El Desfile de Homecoming comienza a las 3:45 pm. Estimados Padres y Tutores de Estudiantes Seniors,
Todos los estudiantes de último año (y otros estudiantes que se gradúan con la clase de 2022) están invitados a enviar la siguiente información para el anuario 2022. Toda la información debe ser presentada antes de la fecha límite y seguir los requisitos para ser incluida en el anuario. Fotos de Seniors
Los retratos de Seniors pueden ser tomados profesionalmente o por un amigo o familiar. La foto que envíe debe estar en orientación vertical. Le recomendamos que elija un retrato que se enfoque en la cara de su estudiante para que no parezca demasiado pequeño cuando se imprima en el anuario. Fotos de Bebe de Seniors
Tiene la opción de enviar una foto de su estudiante cuando era bebé (lo ideal es un año o menos). Estas fotos no tienen un requisito de tamaño o calidad. Recortaremos las fotos según sea necesario. Intente elegir una imagen que no sea borrosa. Las fotos para bebés seniors deben enviarse digitalmente. Si no tiene un archivo digital, puede digitalizar la foto de su bebé de una de las siguientes maneras:

Calificación de BHS: Estado Actual/Progreso | |

Durante los últimos años, Baraboo HS ha estado investigando, evaluando y mejorando las prácticas de calificación para aumentar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Las calificaciones son, por definición, herramientas utilizadas para comunicar el desempeño de los estudiantes. La comunicación precisa y significativa sobre el progreso del aprendizaje es esencial para que los estudiantes alcancen su máximo potencial de aprendizaje. Desafortunadamente, las calificaciones tradicionales basadas en porcentajes ofrecen poco en cuanto a la comunicación significativa y precisa del aprendizaje y luchan por reflejar el pensamiento complejo que ocurre en los salones de clase de hoy.
El personal de Baraboo High School ha utilizado los estándares curriculares nacionales y estatales aprobados por la junta para diseñar los Estándares de Prioridad de Baraboo High School. Estos estándares prioritarios articulan el conocimiento y las habilidades esenciales asociados con cada área de contenido e incluyen rúbricas que se utilizan para medir y comunicar el progreso de los estudiantes hacia el dominio de estos estándares esenciales. Los informes de calificaciones de los estudiantes no solo incluyen calificaciones con letras, sino también niveles actuales de competencia en cada estándar curricular, así como hábitos de trabajo, lo que brinda a los estudiantes y padres información significativa sobre el progreso del aprendizaje.
Estas prácticas altamente examinadas e investigadas han demostrado que aumentan el rendimiento en las aulas de todo el país y, habiendo utilizado estas prácticas durante años en BHS, hemos experimentado los beneficios. Los maestros nuevos en estas prácticas han experimentado resultados positivos en sus salones. Una maestra dijo sobre las habilidades de escritura de sus alumnos: "He visto más crecimiento en una semana que en un mes el año pasado". Otra maestra dijo del rigor en su clase, "Ha aumentado dramáticamente...eso, para mí, es increíble. Mis estudiantes han aprendido más y han demostrado una comprensión más profunda de la fisiología... los estudiantes encuentran el contenido más accesible ya que saben exactamente lo que deben hacer para avanzar".

CAMPUS VISIT DAYS
Una de las mejores maneras para que un posible estudiante y sus padres o tutores determinen si una universidad es una buena opción es visitar el campus. Por lo general, los estudiantes deben comenzar a buscar universidades durante su penúltimo año y visitar los campus que les interesen. Además de brindar la oportunidad de reunirse con el personal de admisión, las visitas al campus le permiten al estudiante ver el campus a través de una visita guiada. Los estudiantes que deseen reunirse con profesores, entrenadores u otro personal de la universidad también pueden programar citas con anticipación.
¡Nada te emociona más acerca de la universidad que visitar un campus! También es una de las mejores maneras de familiarizarse con los entresijos de la vida en el campus. Las visitas guiadas están llenas de datos sobre qué esperar de su vida académica y estudiantil. ¡También se reunirá con un representante de admisiones, una vista previa de los programas y con el personal de servicios estudiantiles, admisiones, ayuda financiera, departamentos académicos y posiblemente estudiantes actuales!
Representantes Universitarios/Reclutadores Militares que Visitan BHS
Otra excelente manera de recibir información de una escuela o rama específica de las fuerzas armadas es reunirse con un representante. Los representantes programan visitas regularmente y organizan reuniones durante los períodos de enriquecimiento y almuerzo durante el otoño. Estas recomendaciones también se pueden usar más adelante para becas, así que recuérdale a tu escritor que puede regresar en enero para solicitar otra copia; modificado para reflejar la beca en lugar de la entrada a la universidad.

Cualquier estudiante que planee tomar cursos universitarios en UW Platteville/Baraboo Campus o Madison College durante 2do semestre de este año escolar, fueron invitados a asistir a la reunión de Early College Credit Program (ECCP) y Start College Now (SCN) durante homeroom el 15 de septiembre en el área

Prueba de Instituciones Postsecundarias Opcionales
Esta es la lista de colegios y universidades que han pasado a la prueba opcional para el proceso de admisión este año escolar y potencialmente más allá. Continúe consultando con su institución individual para obtener la información y las políticas más actualizadas con respecto a los puntajes de las pruebas ACT.
Asistencia Estudiantes Grado 12
Según la Política de la Junta Escolar 345.62 Ejercicios de Graduación de la Escuela Superior (Ceremonia de Graduación), los estudiantes del último año deben asistir a la escuela al menos el 90% de los días escolares/períodos de clase en el primer y segundo semestre de su último año.
El 90% se define como faltar no más de 9 días completos o 45 períodos de clase (cuatro períodos de clase más el enrichment/homeroom), o no más de 9 de cualquier período de clase por semestre, incluido el enrichment/homeroom. Se requiere que los estudiantes en un día escolar reducido asistan al 90% de sus períodos de clase programados y no pueden faltar a más de 9 períodos de clase por semestre en cualquier clase.
Las siguientes ausencias no se incluyen para el 90% de asistencia:
Emergencias familiares comunicadas a un administrador de la escuela
Actividades escolares
Ausencias por obligaciones religiosas o tribales
Ausencias justificadas a través de una nota profesional, enfermera escolar o trabajador social
Visitas postsecundarias pre aprobadas y documentadas
Viajes familiares preaprobados que no se pueden programar en ningún otro momento
Funerales
El principal o la persona designada por el principal puede usar su discreción para justificar la ausencia de un estudiante por circunstancias atenuantes.
- La escuela controlará las ausencias de los estudiantes. Si un estudiante tiene tendencia a exceder el número total de ausencias permitidas, la administración de la escuela superior convocará una reunión con el estudiante, los padres/tutores legales del estudiante y el trabajador social de la escuela para desarrollar un plan de servicios para mejorar la asistencia.
- Si un estudiante excede el número total de ausencias permitidas, se enviará una carta indicando que el estudiante no es elegible para participar en la ceremonia de graduación. Sin embargo, el padre/tutor legal y/o el estudiante pueden solicitar una reunión con la administración de la escuela superior con el fin de crear un plan que detalle cómo el estudiante puede participar en la ceremonia de graduación.
- Participó en la práctica de graduación y cumple con las reglas de participación en la ceremonia establecidas por el director (libre de la influencia/uso de drogas y alcohol, vestimenta adecuada, sin matracas, etc.).
Esta política está vigente para todos los estudiantes del último año, incluidos aquellos que han cumplido los 18 años. No impedirá que los estudiantes reciban su diploma si han cumplido con los requisitos de crédito.
Senior SEIP
Según la Política 345.6 de la Junta de Educación del Distrito Escolar de Baraboo, se requiere que los estudiantes completen y participen en el proceso de la Carpeta de Entrevistas de Salida para Seniors (SEIP, por sus siglas en inglés) para poder graduarse de la Escuela Superior de Baraboo.
Los plazos para el vencimiento de los artículos del portafolio varían dependiendo de si un senior es un Graduado Temprano o Graduado Regular. Sin embargo, cada estudiante debe presentar un portafolio completo y participar en el proceso de entrevista para cumplir con los requisitos de graduación.
Graduados Tempranos
Si planea graduarse al final del primer semestre, debe enviar una carta de intención para graduarse antes (consulte la Política de la Junta 345.61). Hable con su consejero para obtener más información. Se puede obtener un resumen de la carta de la Sra. Saldivar. Las cartas vencen el 15 de octubre.

Información de Deportes de Primavera de la Escuela Superior
Si su hijo está interesado en participar en un deporte de invierno, deberá registrar a su hijo en el Portal de Padres que estará disponible a partir del 10 de octubre. En este enlace encontrara donde registrarse. Necesitará el número de identificación escolar de 9 dígitos de su estudiante, que se puede encontrar en la pestaña “Today” en el Centro de mensajes. Una vez que tenga el número de identificación de la escuela, regrese al Centro de mensajes y haga clic en la pestaña “Survey” en la parte superior de la página. Las tarifas se pueden pagar en línea o con un cheque o en efectivo en la oficina de la escuela secundaria. Las tarifas deportivas no se agregan a su cuenta hasta que la oficina de atletismo ingrese a su hijo en el deporte específico en Infinite Campus. Exámenes Físicos WIAA
Los exámenes físicos de WIAA se basan en la fecha del 1 de abril. Los exámenes físicos con fecha anterior al 1 de abril de 2021 ya no son válidos. Los exámenes físicos con fecha del 1 de abril de 2021 o posterior serán válidos para los años escolares 2021-22 y 2022-23. Los exámenes físicos son buenos para DOS AÑOS ESCOLARES, no dos años a partir de la fecha del examen físico.
