We have offered a variety of Marco Bonfante wines since last month's Classic Café tasting ,where we presented his wines and listened to him speak about each wine we tasted. We have not yet offered the 2014 Barbaresco because we sold everything in town at the Classic Café event. There were 9 six pack cases in Austin. We had them transferred and now they have arrived. First, let me say that one seldom stumbles upon Barbaresco for $30.00, much less exceptional Barbaresco. This big red is elegant. Michele's all encompassing, over riding comment at the Classic event was that the "Bonfante Barbaresco is so seamless it does not require food". I completely agree, with a little time to breath this Bonfante shows beautiful structure and wonderful clarity of fruit. 2014 was a vintage where vines were stressed early in the year, then storms hit much of Piedmont, but not Barbaresco. Early stress, then a long growing season has delivered in 2014 a Barbaresco vintage which show great spice and character.  Rex

Flavor Profile; The 2014 Marco Bonfante Barbaresco shows spicy mixed berries with violets on the nose. The initial flavor perceived is lush red cherry with hints of orange peel. The Bonfante then grows darker, exhibiting
black cherry and dark rich raspberry components. The finish is long and infused with exotic spice.  The 2014 Marco Bonfante Barbaresco will show great diversity at the dinner table. This wine is elegant enough to serve with poultry or pork, but we have also paired it with a juicy ribeye. The richer the meal, the more you will notice how much extraction this Barbaresco actually displays. Drink now for at least ten years, Marco told us he believes it will cellar for twenty.

Grape Variety; 100% Nebbiolo

According to some sources, the name "Barbaresco" derives from "Barbarica Sylva", an ancient forest dedicated from the Romans to Mars. It also was the hiding place of a barbarian community, probably from Liguria.
 
WINEMAKING:
 The destalked and pressed grapes ferment on the skins in thermo-conditioned steel tanks from 10 to 20 days. The wine ages for 24 months in oak barrels, a part in big oak barrels and a part in tonneaux. It refines in the bottle for 6 months.

TASTING: Barbaresco enchants for its elegance and pleasantness, with spiced and velvety aromas which are really captivating for the nose and palate and that leave a long gustatory persistence. In the glass it shows with a clear ruby red color when young, with garnet reflections if aged.

It has an intense bouquet, with flower aromas of violet, truffle and marzipan. Very good is its ageing potential: more than 10 years if stored at controlled and constant temperature between 12°-14°C.
