The Barbed Rose

As One Door Closes, Another One Opens!

After Dinner service on June 30th, 2012 the Alvin Restaurant Group will close the doors of the renowned Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Company. Four days later (July 4th, 2012) The restaurant will reopen (and Re-Brand) as the Coastal Crossing Grill, a Gulf Coast Seafood house specializing in homemade, Gulf Coast fare, from South of the Border to the Florida Keys.

The Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Co. was created as part of Joe Schneider's master plan to revive downtown Alvin with world class food and entertainment venues for the local community that would also attract new faces to the Alvin area. "For the last two years, The Barbed Rose has done exactly what we created it to do" say's Joe Schneider, "put Alvin on the culinary map". Executive Chef Jason Chaney added, "Not many restaurants grasp onto the "From Scratch" philosophy as hard and unrelentingly as we did." "The Barbed Rose cuisine created a strong following within the foodie community throughout the Houston Metropolitan area, and we are proud of all we accomplished in two short years", says General Manager Pat Burford. The Barbed Rose closing is the end of one era for the Alvin Restaurant Group and the beginning of a new one with the introduction of Coastal Crossing Grill.

On July 4th, 2012 the Coastal Crossing Grill "A Local Gulf Coast Eatery will open at 113 East Sealy Street, in Alvin, Texas (the former site of the Barbed Rose). The menu will offer a wide variety of specialties from the entire coast of the Gulf of Mexico. "We wanted to create a restaurant that offered the quality cuisine we are know for, but make it more affordable and more approachable," say's Joe Schneider. Coastal Crossing Grill will be taking the best of the Barbed Rose and adding more Gulf Coast flair to it. Jason Chaney adds, "We are going to cook delicious food, using some of the same recipes that Houston-area food critics raved about, and present it in a more casual and laidback atmosphere." "Metropolitan Food critics have often raved about our Fish, Seafood, Cajun and Creole dishes, so we decided to focus on what we do best," says Joe Schneider. Coastal Crossing Grill will be a casual dining experience without all the trappings of a stuffy, special occasion only restaurant; the type of place you can enjoy a couple of times each week, and not be broke for the rest of the month. The Coastal Crossing Patio Bar (formerly the Burger Bar @ The Barbed Rose) will be a lively scene with tropical specialty drinks, bottled craft beers, live music and more.

As Corporate Chef for the Alvin Restaurant Group, Jason Chaney will retain culinary oversight of Coastal Crossing Grill. Veteran front of the house manager Cory Richardson also returns to run the dining room and front of the house. Desserts will be sources from Norma's Cakes and Cookies, the Alvin Restaurant Group's in-house Bakery, and meats will be custom cut by in-house Artisan Butcher Jay Peek. Owner Joe Schneider summed it up by saying, "We are proud of our accomplishments as the Barbed Rose, and thank everyone for helping us realize our dreams for Alvin, and we look forward to kicking it up a notch with the Coastal Crossing Grill."

Praise for the Barbed Rose and Executive Chef Jason Chaney:

Alison Cook- Houston Chronicle...

When the kitchen - under chef Jason Chaney - is good, it's terrific, turning out a stirring chicken and sausage gumbo that a gimlet-eyed Cajun could love. That snappy chicken-skin cracklin' on top? Genius. I loved the plump, shiny-skinned quail stuffed with crawfish-and-andouille dressing, moored in a pool of touffe-like roux. A fried-oyster appetizer was stunning in its simplicity, the sea flavors picked up by cartwheels of pickled jalapeno and thick, house-cured bacon with a sweet-smoky tug of earth.

Alison Cook- Houston Chronicle...

And one night's rendition of grilled redfish, cooked to a perfect, pearly turn, wowed me with its discreet ribbon of piquillo-pepper beurre blanc alongside. Just enough - rather than the all-too-usual Houston fish treatment of much too much.

Alison Cook- Houston Chronicle...

The quail was an appetizer (and a steal at 11 bucks), but it could easily serve as an entree with a salad or a side. And it's easily one of the best Louisiana-style dishes in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area.

John Hook- 29-95...

You know your in Alvin until the first bite, then you don't care where you are. Chef Chaney...turned out as good a chunk of tasty grilled Dorado as I've had anywhere.
