ORCA Murals
When science meets art, beautiful things happen. Years ago, when I first met Dr. Edie Widder, she was working on a children’s book with Janeen Mason. I’m not sure if the book has seen the light of day yet but Widder, founder of Ocean Research & Conservation Association , is always open for a chance to combine and promote the connection.

A Citizen Science Center will be opening this fall next to the Vero Beach airport, thanks to the City of Vero Beach and Widder’s ORCA. Widder said, “(The building) was originally built for water quality testing but hasn’t been used for the past 8 years.”

That space was the perfect place for Widder’s plans. “We are just beginning to spin up programs with a number of different children’s groups in Indian River County,” she said. The programs will include “an environmental summer camp program that involves Vero Beach High School students mentoring Exceptional Education students, a collaboration with the Homeless Children’s Foundation of IRC involving Vero Beach middle school girls, a collaboration with Daisy Hope Center involving underserved K-12 Vero Beach students and a collaboration with the Science Discovery Institute (Gifford Youth Achievement Center) involving Gifford middle school students.”
Enter the art element: Widder approached the Vero Beach Art Club about a mural for the new digs. There just happens to be a core group of artists in the club who have a history with history/science based murals. See the room-spanning mural painted by Judy Burgarella, Dawn Mill, and Christine Thomas at the Vero Beach Community Center several years ago.

Mill said Sue Dinenno, longtime Art Club member, told her that ORCA wanted a mural for their new research center near the airport. Mill worked on a sketch and presented it to ORCA; then, with Dinenno, “rounded up four other artists, Carol Makris, Rita Ziegler, Judy Rixom, and Judy Burgarella. We each worked on a panel for a total of six paintings.” Five of them depict the ecosystems of Indian River County and the sixth painting shows the river at night with the bioluminescence.”

It’s all about teamwork. Mill said, “The Art Club donated the canvases, the Artist Guild Gallery donated the space and storage. I donated some of the paint and some of the other artists did, too. All of the artists either now belong or have belonged to the gallery and all of us are Art Club members.”

Stay tuned for news on the opening of the Citizen Science Center. A just-in note from Widder about that book: “Still trying to find somebody w skill set needed to turn it into high end interactive e-book.”

SPECIAL OPEN MIC NIGHT THURSDAY AUG. 22
AUDITION TO BE ONE OF OUR COMEDY ZONE EMCEES
Platinum Show Chorus
Barbershop harmony has no age limits for listening or for singing, if you ask Terri Kroger, the 70-year-old performance manager and lead singer for the Melbourne-based Platinum Show Chorus . The chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, an organization formed in the 1940s by a small group of women who “wanted to participate in the chord-ringing, fun-filled harmony that the men were singing,” according to the website. There are more than 600 chapters of Sweet Adelines, Kroger said, with around 24,000 members worldwide and 12,000 registered quartets.

The Platinum Show Chorus was co-founded by Carol Schaub, “who was in her 52nd year as a Sweet Adeline and a charter member of our chapter,” Kroger said. Schaub passed away this year. The beginning group of about 30 singers was made up of women who “had sung in other barbershop choruses and also novices that wanted to start a Sweet Adeline chapter in Brevard county.” That was 1974. More than four decades later, the roster still numbers the same.
Kroger explained that barbershop is four-part harmony, “so one sings with a chorus, quartet or octet.” Those vocal parts: Lead - melody; Baritone - harmony; Tenor - the angels; Bass - low range. When someone expresses interest in joining the group, “We do voice placement with each new member. Everyone has a spot. We love to have visitors. Usually they attend for three times, then audition but we are flexible with that schedule. (You) must be 16 to become a member.” They couldn’t have made auditioning much easier!

From the website: “You will be voice-placed at your first rehearsal, … . After attending a few rehearsals you will be given our audition materials: sheet music and a CD or thumb drive with the voice parts. When you are ready you request an audition. … You are welcome to ask for practice auditions for feedback and help! … If by chance you do not pass you have as many tries to pass as you need! Here are the learning tracks for our audition song: How We Sang Today - All Voices    How We Sang Today - Bass    How We Sang Today - Bari    How We Sang Today - Lead    How We Sang Today - Tenor
...and here's the sheet music:  How We Sang Today ." Rehearsals are held at Unity of Melbourne, 2401 N. Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne, every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Just for the love of singing, the Platinum Show Chorus perform at community gatherings, retirement communities, rehab facilities, and private gatherings, Kroger said. They’ll will be singing at Mulligan’s Beach House, 425 E. Eau Gallie Blvd. in Melbourne Aug. 29 for Christmas in August. No decorations, but lots of Christmas music and “We will probably be dressed in goofy Christmas hats.” Girls just want to have fun!

Program Notes (unabridged version) from Rochelle Sallee
Bowing to her intimate knowledge of the subject, Arts Blast is serving up Rochelle Sallee's Program Notes for Sunday's concert at Community Church of Vero Beach.

Welcome to the Summer Sampler Concert! I am honored to be a part of the first seasonal chamber series celebrating the new piano in the Chapel. When I was invited, I immediately jumped on the chance to move away from the formality of regular Seasonal programming and came up with this themed program inspired by Summer.

As you can see in the formal program list, I have a written a personal reflection or inspiration for each selection. Why is this concert a “Sampler?” In traditional concert format, a sonata movement is rarely performed alone. I chose the First Movement of Beethoven’s “Tempest” Sonata because if reminds me so much of the variety of storms and seas we experience here in Florida. From tiny drops to outright gales, the sudden quiet of the “eye” of a hurricane to the magnificence of sunlit trees glistening with moisture…This movement speaks to me of weather.

The next “Sampler” is in performing the Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) in 3 groups instead of straight through (1-13) traditional performance practice. Each piece titled and a few are very short (:35) meant to be played without applause in between, with just a few seconds between to allow the “flavor” to linger. I find these memories of childhood like a crystal bowl filled with lovely bite sized piece of perfectly ripe fruit, unique and ready to appreciate.
Edvard Grieg was a prolific composer, bringing us top ten favorites like the Suite from Peer Gynt, his piano concerto in A minor and all of his beautiful Lyric Pieces reflecting the identity of Norway. The basis for many were dances, natural surroundings and stories of trolls, fairies and mountain life. Many of those pieces he transcribed for both piano four hands (duet) and full orchestra. Wedding at Troldhaugen was composed as a gift to his wife on their 25 th anniversary. Reflecting the time period, rips for guests were planned months in advance and large reunions were huge achievement in cooperation. Of great interest to many is that Grieg himself wrote Programmatic Notes in the margins of this score. He tells us in words that the music starts with the servants arriving, the musicians tuning, the scurry of kitchen staff and the arrival of guests! So in telling a story in words, he writes the music to describe the entire Event of the Wedding. After a tender romantic tribute to his Love, the music returns to the after wedding party. Listen closely for the final door closing after the last guest departs!

Chopin wrote 4 Scherzos, (Jokes) and of them, this is my favorite. It needs no explanation for the audience, the form is simple but the music is complex. The opening reminds me of my sisters hiding behind trees in the woods to scare me out of my wits as I walked along! The sudden explosions and beats of silence are coupled with a gorgeous romantic melody. Hints of strife and heartbreak resolve in what can only be describes as musical fireworks at the end.

The last “Sample”is a John Philip Sousa march, Stars and Stripes , which was originally written for a full concert band. . I have loved Sousa marches my entire life. Both of my parents have and still do play in concert bands, and my father was a marching band member at U. of Nebraska. Vladimir Horowitz delighted Americans many years ago with a spectacular piano arrangement which he never wrote down. He just created it in his head and delighted everyone with his brilliant playing. My arrangement is inspired by Horowitz’ performance, as I traced his ideas from watching the recordings, and managed the notes to fit my hands! It’s short, loud, soft, fast…and unfortunately due to the acoustics I will have to ask you to resist clapping along during the performance. Save up all the claps for after if you wish!

Thank you for attending live performances of all types, the Art community would not continue to thrive were it not for you.
Lighting Up the Barn Theatre
From The Barn's Facebook page:

Meet the Barn’s charismatic Austin Allen-Garcia who lights up the stage as Lumiere in Beauty and The Beast!
Austin was born in Fayetteville Arkansas and eventually found his way to the treasure coast. Now he’s hooked and the Barn is lucky to have his amazing talents!
Outside the theater, Austin has been a Receiving Manager for 8 years and enjoys anything crafty and spending time with his husband and pets, preferably on the beach! His smile and laugh are contagious to everyone around him.
