Jewelry Auctions are Booming, so Phillips is Adding a Major New Sale in Geneva
Carol Besler
Robb Report

The jewelry auction business has been quite good lately, and Carol Besler tells us about Phillips' success and expansion to Geneva in her latest feature.

Besler reports that "sales of jewelry at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Phillips, Antiquorum and Bonhams for the first half of 2023 increased by 45 percent (while watch sales declined by 18 percent). Therefore, it is no surprise that Phillips has announced it will start holding jewelry auctions in Geneva, starting this November, thus adding Europe to its jewelry sale territories."

Controversy
Tower of London’s Crown Jewels:
colonial diamonds overshadow reopened exhibition’s most interesting objects
Displayed as part of the museum’s larger collections of crowns, coronation regalia and other royal jewels dating from the middle ages, the two controversial diamonds, the Koh-i-noor and the Cullinan, are the key attractions of the exhibition.

It explains how they originated in the colonies, travelled to Britain and were cut to be added to royal crowns.

But does it explain away the controversy?

Drake Outs Himself as Buyer of Tupac Shakur’s Iconic Crown Ring, Sold for $1 Million at Sotheby’s
July 28, 2023

Earlier this week, Tupac Shakur’s iconic “crown” ring, which the rapper designed and commissioned months before his untimely death in 1996, sold for $1,016,000 at Sotheby’s New York.

A bidding war pushed the purchase price up to more than three times the lot’s high estimate of $300,000 (estimates do not encompass fees; final prices do). Typically, auction winners remain anonymous, but on Friday, July 28, the victor outed himself as the new wearer of the crown.

In an Instagram story, rapper Drake posted a picture of himself holding the newly acquired piece of jewelry. Sotheby’s confirmed that he was the buyer shortly afterward.

The Dazzling History of
Diamonds and Weapons
August 1, 2023 –

As symbols of power and indestructibility, iconic diamonds have a synergy with the weapons. Embedded in swords, daggers, guns, and even used as poison rings, natural diamonds have long added a mystique and luxury to the weapons of the elite.

A magnificent ode to the iconic fabric, the collection showcases Chanel’s ingenuity with gold and diamonds—and an incredibly unique artistic vision High Jewellery plays a number of different roles for its creator.

First, like haute couture, it is to showcase the immense savoir-faire and great lengths to which the maison will go in order to create the pieces. Second, it continues a tradition which has lasted centuries, so perpetuating the legacy of craftsmanship for the next generation.

Third, it represents a paragon of value through noble materials and precious gemstones, often including the rarest specimens money can buy.

A Little Science
Gemological and Chemical Composition Characteristics of Basalt-Related Rubies from Chanthaburi-Trat, Thailand
The geographic origin determination of ruby is increasingly important in the gem trade and geological research. Unlike metamorphic-related ruby, the rarer basalt-related ruby has gained significant attention, especially from Thailand, a major producer of such gems. Thai rubies are classified as magmatic-related origin rubies, which can be found as xenocrysts (xenoliths) hosted by alkali basalts. This paper focuses on the gemological characteristics, inclusion morphology, identification, and geochemistry of basalt-hosted ruby from the Chanthaburi-Trat area in Thailand.

In an underwater excavation, archaeologists found a rare engraved Roman gemstone in the village Lio Piccolo, just north of Venice, Italy, Italy 24 Press News reported last week.

The cut agate is engraved with a mythological figure and is being considered an unusual artifact, particularly in an underwater environment.

The quality of the jewel indicates that wealthy Romans might have visited the area.

The find is considered rare, in a lagoon environment it is one of the very few of this type ever found.

Some Interesting Research
Using Gemstones' Unique Characteristics
to Uncover Ancient Trade Routes

“Gemstones such as emerald and peridot have been mined since antiquity,” Surour said. “Sometimes, some gemstones were brought by sailors and traders to their homelands. For example, royal crowns in Europe are decorated with peculiar gemstones that originate from either Africa or Asia. We need to have precise methods to distinguish the source of a gemstone and trace ancient trade routes in order to have correct information about the original place from which it was mined.”

Since ancient times, gemstones have been mined and traded across the globe, sometimes traveling continents from their origin. Gems are geologically defined as minerals celebrated for beauty, strength, and rarity. Their unique elemental composition and atomic orientation act as a fingerprint, enabling researchers to uncover the stones’ past, and with it, historical trade routes.
