The KEA and KSD bargaining teams met for the first time on June 25 to discuss norms and plan for future bargaining dates. Our first official bargaining session was held yesterday, where KEA presented an initial compensation proposal, including an increase for guest teachers, which is long overdue.
KEA also shared some additional proposals regarding the safety of staff and students. Results from the bargaining survey reveal that this is a member priority. Especially since our data show that assaults on staff have increased significantly in the last three years. The district also shared a proposal regarding this issue. The two proposals are very different, but we are confident that we will find common ground.
Bargaining in a video conferencing environment has presented some challenges, but at this time, both teams are committed to having a tentative agreement sometime in August. In the meantime, KEA will keep you informed on our progress. The next scheduled bargaining session will be on Monday, July 6.
In addition to this particular bargain, there are over 20 KEA members participating in the reopening of our schools task force. Those members will make recommendations to our bargaining team. The working conditions for opening in the Fall will also need to be negotiated. In other words, we are working hard!
Thank you for all your support and well wishes. We will keep you updated as we continue to meet throughout the summer. Take care and stay safe.
